That WSJ story pretty much confirms what some have suspected: that the original wiretap was triggered by a Tribune tip to Fitz about Blago trying to shake the Trib down.

Through their "cooperation" with the FBI the Tribune Company brass found out the investigation was also leading to Obama's staff's involvement with the Senate seat sale, and they rushed to stop it by going public about the wire surveillance.

Win, win for the Trib: their $ deal with the state re Wrigley Field is now secure, since Blago can't touch it, while their golden boy has been saved from disaster.
