The Politburo-style selection of Michael Ingatieff as their new leader - with a group of Liberal elites doing the selecting - was a fascinating glimpse into the Ottawa party's sense of democracy.
Of course, Albertans, who have been on the receiving end of anti-West Liberal prime ministers in the past like Pierre Trudeau and Jean Chretien, know all about that offensive organization.
The National Energy Program and the Kyoto Agreement are the two most obvious examples of federal Liberal regimes enacting legislation designed to deliberately harm Alberta's hydrocarbon economy.
So it was with some interest last week to hear Ignatieff say, "We've got a long way to go" in winning back the "loyalty and trust" of western Canadians in general, and Albertans in particular.
The unelected Liberal leader went as far to call the West the "beating economic heart of our country's future ... where the destiny of our country's economy will be played out. "
This is coming from the leader of a political party that short weeks ago wanted to rape and pillage Alberta with the Green Shift carbon tax.
"I want to reach out and hope that western Canadians forgive and forget some of the errors the party has made in the past," Ignatieff continued.
He went on to talk about the "depth of respect" he has for "western economic achievement."
And until he can "regain that trust" the eastern Grits "cannot be a truly national party."
Nice try, Iggy. It's going to take more than one half-hearted apology to convince large numbers of Albertans that Ignatieff is somehow different than his predecessors, especially with a curious blog entry on Ignatieff's website recounting a visit he made to Fort McMurray last August.
By the gee-whiz nature of the piece, it's pretty clear the Liberal leader had never been to the Athabasca oilsands before.
Not surprising. For a fellow who reckons he's got the right stuff to be prime minister of Canada, Ignatieff has spent most of his adult life trying to distance himself from his homeland.
He babbles on about the "immense scale of everything" and the "staggeringly large trucks and shovels."
But it doesn't take the eastern Liberal long to figure out what to do.
"The federal government has an important role to play," Ignatieff wrote. "But as far as I could learn, federal environmental authority is nowhere to be seen.
"Ottawa, working with Alberta, has a big role to play in getting the project right," he vowed.
"I haven't seen anything more exciting or more troubling in my travels this year."
This doesn't sound like the same guy who extended the olive branch and smoked the peace pipe last week.
Will the real Iggy please stand up?
Trusting a Liberal leader is a stench
Ha ha ha GREAT comment! LOL
Liberals have destroyed Western Canada. The Maritimes, Quebec and Ontario and giant worthless losers sucking on the Western Canada teat.
Western Canada should declare independence. Alberta will be the more conservative part of new Kingdom of West Canada and BC and Manitoba can be the more liberal parts. However,ALL of those provinces are better than Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes.
I have special contempt for the Maritimes that are putting that idiot Jack in contention. He is Stalin lite (or heavy)
Translation: Quebec, working over (at least two relevant meanings there) Alberta....
LOL!
Same thing?
Exactly.
Liberals have almost destroyed Canada, much like they are starting to do in the US.
The Maritimes are our Michigan, or New Jersey. BC is our California, so the West is not a good way of describing our situation.
Almost all our cities lean more liberal, and almost all our 'fly-over' country leans more conservative.
Quebec excepted. At 6 out of 30 million, that is a problem.
Fanfan,
I know BC is more liberal than Alberta (or as it is better known, the Texas of Canada). However, I can still put up with BC better than I can put up with the idiots from Quebec and the Maritimes.
I am especially annoyed at the Maritimes as they have made a collective Provincial decision that since fishing is on the decline they would rather suck the living daylights out of income the hard working men and women of Western Canada than actually do something to improve their lot.
Hard to believe that the majority of the population of the Maritimes is of Scotch/Irish/English descent as they show none of the famous work ethic anymore as those countries are famous for
Yes, look at England now.
How sad.
