My husband asked me earlier if it was a travel warning or ban. You’d think with a hijacking and Americans being accused by the hijackers of being CIA that it would have been a ban. You have personal experience of a warning in 82. Was there an initial ban downgraded to a warning? I don’t know. I only remember the hijacking. It lasted almost 2 weeks.

I don’t think there was ever a ban, and if there was it was short lived. Kind of a short version of the story of why I was there. My sister met a guy from Pakistan in college in the late 70s. They went to Pakistan in 1981. They decided to stay there and get married. The marriage only lasted a year or so, and she wanted to come home, but his family wouldn’t let her leave unescorted. (cultural thing) I went to go get her and bring her back. His family was very nice, and I never felt that I was in danger. They were very protective of her, but when I came we spent some time in the community and everyone was very welcoming. I was only there for a little over a week.

She traveled to Pakistan once in 1979 and once in 1981. I went in 1982.There were no restrictions at that time. I don’t really remember the hijacking, but I was only 19 at the time and didn’t pay much attention to foreign affairs.
