This demand has been around for a long time. Even before Christianity, however, the Hippocratic Oath—Classical Version said something to the effect of: "I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody who asked for it, nor will I make a suggestion to this effect. Similarly I will not give to a woman an abortive remedy. In purity and holiness I will guard my life and my art."

There's two lessons in that old oath. (1) You don't need to be a Christian to know that it's wrong for a physician to dispense "assisted suicide". (2) The demand has been around for a long time despite the fact that it's wrong.

The right answer is the status quo - funny how society reached a good decision even without liberal activists pushing for special rights. Those who really want to off themselves have no trouble doing it. Doctors who prescribe strong medicaitons for the terminally ill should not be held responsible if a dying patient takes a week's worth of their pain medication all at one time. Doctors should not be compelled to give a special prescription for suicide, nor should the public pay for this "service". Otherwise the government should stay out of the whole question.

Almost any drug can be deadly in large enough doses.
