this reminds me of the stories my stepfather mentioned of seeing two and three year old running crying to soldiers due to cold and hunger and their instinct to pick them up to help.
They were under strict to NOT TOUCH THEM EVER because the Vietnamese would cut the space between the clavicle and plant a handgrenade to blow up the soldier when the child ws hugged.
He said turning away from the crying, dirty infant was more tramautic that watching friends die in front of him.
That is so sad.
