Hold On, Rezko Sentencing delayed — again

Updated 9:12 PM CST, Thu, Dec 11, 2008

###

Antoin “Tony” Rezko may be waiting to hear his criminal fate a little longer because of the charges against Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Hold on, Mr. Rezko. Your court filing deadlines have been canceled by a federal judge. A status hearing is now set for next week.

It appears the future of convicted political fundraiser Antoin “Tony” Rezko may be in limbo after this week’s charges against Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve had been scheduled to sentence Rezko on Jan. 6, but the corruption charges now facing the governor have put the brakes on it.

Rezko, who was convicted of fraud in June, already had his original October sentence delayed because he was reportedly talking to the feds.

Attorney’s for Rezko had asked for a new sentencing date because of issues he was having in solitary confinement at the downtown Chicago Metropolitan Correctional Center.

Rezko remains in solitary because he is considered a high-risk inmate.

While the FBI affidavit unsealed Tuesday indicates the government “is not yet satisfied that Rezko’s accounts are full and complete,” the judge’s suspension of the deadlines for work that needs to be done in the case indicates Rezko’s cooperation is moving forward. Typically, a judge wouldn’t make such a move unless both sides agreed to it, especially in light of Rezko’s pleas for a quick sentencing.

Rezko’s lawyers didn’t returned calls for comment or responded to a visit to their office. A spokesman for U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald declined to comment on the move.

Because Rezko was a big fund-raiser for both Blagojevich and Obama, his cooperation will likely create yet another headache for Obama’s transition team as the Chicago Democrat prepares to move into the White House.
