Auto Rescue Bill in Peril, Opposed by GOP Senators (No bailout today, no bailout tomorrow!)
ABC ^ | 12/10/2008 | JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS/AP

The House pressed toward passage of a $14 billion bailout for the nation's imperiled auto industry Wednesday night, but the hard-fought deal between Democrats and the Bush White House was in jeopardy amid strong opposition from GOP senators.

Republicans were in full revolt against their party's lame-duck president over the measure, balking at helping Detroit's struggling Big Three without hefty concessions from autoworkers and creditors, and furious about an environmental mandate House Democrats insisted on including in the measure.

Democratic leaders still held out hope that the emergency aid could be enacted by week's end.

The White House, though not formally endorsing an agreement with congressional Democrats, dispatched administration officials to Capitol Hill to make a case for the rescue package. During a contentious, closed-door luncheon with Senate Republicans, White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten got an earful of criticism from the rank-and-file, some of whom have already announced plans to block the measure.

“Republicans were in full revolt against their party’s lame-duck president”

LAME DUCK!

Lame-duck presidents don’t get things done. Bush has nationalized the largest banks and is on the way to nationalizing the worlds largest auto companies. In the last few months he has signed the largest blank checks in the history of mankind.

Show some respect ABC./sarc

When the big 3 do go bellyup and no one is around to buy their intellectual property, machinery, and all of their other assets except for China, don’t go sniveling all over the internet. You will. You’ll cry like a baby when the Chinese come over to administer their new property.
The big three will open their operations again and hire American workers I suspect, but they’ll be owned by China.

As long as you undertand this, fine. Shoot your mouth off. But I would bet most of the bellyaching freepers don’t picture this scenario.

I do understand this and don’t care because the future is Asia and I get that. Do you?

The Bear Trap is about to snap shut, so I suppose when the market tanks, the MSM will use this as the excuse. Then again, my faith in the Republican urge to fold at the last moment says that the media mat not be able to use this one to explain the collapse.

Oh oh oh, and did you see the last sentence of the article?

Also included in the bill is an unrelated pay raise for federal judges.

That “lame duck” stuff has always been B.S. Or maybe not always, but at least since we’ve had the term-limits amendment.

Think about it, if Bush is a lame duck now, wasn’t he a lame duck way back in ‘04, when it was clear that he couldn’t possibly be re-elected? Moreover, there are plenty of things presidents can do all on their own. How are they “lame” when it comes to pardons, vetoes, 90 days of undeclared war, and so on?

I called my Rep and both Senators and they are all NO votes.

Westmoreland, Chambliss and Isakson.

Also called Minority Leader Mitch McConnel’s office and told hime to get the filibuster warmed up.

I don’t want to live in the United States of f___ing France.

Bush has sold us down the river.

This is a golden opprtunity for the Republicans to pull their heads out of their butts and stand up for free markets and liberty.

...and make a profit, support working families, and pay taxes instead of taking taxpayers money. I’m all for it. There are other car companies in America making money with an American work force.

I’m getting ready to buy a new pickup. I was looking at the Sierra... not anymore... more then likely it will be a Toyota or Nissan.

A Japanese truck... I would have never believed it, but between the union blind support for Dems and this bailout, they won’t get my business anytime soon.

How exciting! We get to be an economic colony of Asia! How many more American industries do we get to see disappear?

The Republicans will act tough and shutdown the bailout. Then the bill will be reworked, and it will increase in size to $25 billion with republican and democrat pork. This will help the Republicans feel better about sending the American people up $#!T creek without a paddle, and they will approve this bailout just like the last one. pond scum.

I worry about China as much as anyone (read my profile). Even so, I’ll take that chance, rather than have the UAW become PERMANENT WELFARE QUEENS.

In any case, China has no need for our factories, they have the money to now buy whatever they want on the international markets, thanks, in LARGE PART, to the UAW (and other unions), whom some people seem to want to protect.

The only hope this country will EVER have to manufacture again will be to BREAK THE BACK OF THE UAW, and allow our industries to try to rebuild and forget this nightmare.

There is something surreal about a Senate which without so much as a glance at the books, instantaneously threw a trillion dollars at banks, none of which will ever be seen again, but now sweats the nickels and dimes of 14 billion dollars to the auto companies.

Once again it appears the stooges of the GOP have picked the wrong hill to die on.

I voted for GW twice .... that being said ... If I ever see another stinking Bush family member and their “compassionate conservatism” on ANY Ballot I will puke.

Steadfast in principle on two things, the war on terrorism and the intial tax cuts made “W” the right person for the right time. The rest has been nothing short of disaster of his own making. Immigration. Bailouts. Credibiity in appointments (harriet mier). Lack of CONSERVATIVE leadership.

He will be the one along with the rest of the stinking RINO’s (almost all of the pubbies) that have ushered us into the United states of F____ing France due to their/his lack of leadership abilities.

Yeah, I do. I also understand why. Judging by your post, I'd suspect you don't. Here's a hint: corporate taxes. Why aren't you railing about those?
