WASHINGTON California's Mary Nichols has an idea for how Washington can respond to global warming: Start with the Environmental Protection Agency.
Nichols, the head of the California Air Resources Board, has a big interest in whether that happens. She's believed to be one of two finalists along with Lisa Jackson of New Jersey to head the agency for President-elect Barack Obama.
An announcement is expected this week in Chicago, when Obama names his environmental team.
If Nichols gets the post, she would add to California's growing clout in crafting a national response to global warming. As powerful committee chairs, California Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer and Democratic Rep. Henry Waxman of Los Angeles are already positioned to take leading roles when the new Congress begins tackling the issue in January.
If Nichols loses out, it could be a result of geographic considerations. While officials with Obama's transition team have not given any public indication of who will be chosen, some environmental groups say that Jackson may have the upper hand because she would help balance California's power.

I believe that Mary Nichols is the daughter of Ithaca NY’s former Socialist mayor, Ben Nichols.
I wonder what she will do when she finds out that global warming has stopped. Will she try “Not doing anything” as a solution to the supposed problem?
/sarchasm - the gaping whole between a liberal and the truth.
For the last ten years, there has been NO increase in temperatures, and the cooling trend is getting increasingly negative!
I suppose the C.A.R.B. will impose more restrictions on california oil refinery operations, charcoal fired outdoor barbeques, off road recreation vehicles, and any business that tries to paint anything will be shut down.....same ole same ol
Flashback to 2007:
** SCHWARZENEGGER APPOINTS FORMER JERRY BROWN AND DAVIS CABINET MEMBER MARY NICHOLS CHIEF OF AIR RESOURCES BOARD.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has appointed Mary Nichols as chair of the California Air Resources Board. As Jerry Browns air board chair in the 1970s and 1980s, Nichols and the other board members used the waiver customarily granted California under the Clean Air Act to impose effective laws banning lead in gasoline and requiring catalytic converters in automobiles. She also served as secretary for environmental protection under Brown and as secretary for resources under Gray Davis.
In between those terms, Nichols who has been heading up the UCLA Institute for the Environment and has been a longtime leader of the Natural Resources Defense Council was deputy chief of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under President Bill Clinton. There Nichols was in charge of air quality issues, and developed and oversaw a successful cap & trade program that effectively cut acid rain.
Nichols takes over the air board in the wake of last weeks firing of former chairman Dr. Bob Sawyer. A controversy has developed over alleged micro-management of the air board which is part of the executive branch of Californias government by staffers in Schwarzeneggers office. For his part, Schwarzenegger has said he was unsatisfied with Sawyers decision to delay for 11 years the implementation of air quality programs in the smog-ridden Central Valley. Asked if he would have chief of staff Susan Kennedy and deputy chief of staff Dan Dunmoyer testify before an Assembly committee hearing this Friday, Schwarzeneggers answer was that Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez is welcome to come by and ask him anything he wants. The proposed hearing of the Assembly Natural Resources Committee would be chaired by Berkeley Assemblywoman Loni Hancock, one of the few actual as distinguished from imagined socialists in the California Legislature.
Well then, I guess she is more than qualified to implement another lucrative cap-and-trade program.
I feel as if, I, along with many others, are being constantly bombarded with solutions for saving the Unicorns from evil fairies. I understand quite well there are no such creatures and I marvel that so much time and so many resources are committed to getting rid of fairies and saving unicorns.
It is amazing to me how easily so many can be totally indoctrinated so easily. They never see any unicorns or fairies but they have read articles, viewed commercials and been taught repeatedly that both do in fact exist. They have seen photos of white horses that they were told were unicorns who had their horns torn off by evil fairies. The photos are everywhere, imprinted in our minds. We have been given the visual evidence that Unicorn scientists say is incontrovertible; the science is settled.
There are heretics (mostly evil conservatives who are secret fairies) who arrogantly state that the fairies are simply hummingbirds and are quite essential to all life on Earth. Unicorn scientists always counter their foolish arguments by asking them, “If the photographic evidence of fairies are not then true then by what or whom are the unicorns being killed?”
Scientists say we must do something about this and do it now. Do we want future generations to grow up being choked-out by the overabundance of evil fairies? How could one live in a world without unicorns? Sure, the evil fairies are only killing unicorns now but when all the unicorns are gone be careful they do not turn their gaze upon you.
Until there are more who will stand up and shout “THERE ARE NO UNICORNS OR FAIRIES” outnumber those who fear being labeled ignorant, despite knowing the truth; time, energy and resources will continue to be squandered saving unicorns (that don’t exist) from being killed by fairies, who are actually just hummingbirds looking for nectar and pollinating the Earth.
