I like the fact that she made a point to great all the little kids even though it held up the line.
Cupcake, anyone?Posted by Wesley LoyPosted: June 9, 2008 - 8:14 pm
From Wesley Loy in Juneau
After another day of pipeline hearings, legislators this evening were invited over to Gov. Sarah Palins house for a reception, the second at her place since the special session began.
The high point came when Palin walked into the dining room with an enormous platter of chocolate-covered cupcakes ablaze with candles.
The cupcakes were to thank all the lawmakers for their time and hard work, she said, and to celebrate Rep. Mike Doogans birthday.
Then Palin started the happy birthday song for Doogan, who was jocular as ever.
If it werent for the alternative, Id just as soon skip it, he said of his 60th birthday.
Sure was interesting to see who showed up at the reception. I saw several of Palins Democratic friends, plus some less kindly members of her own Republican party: Senate President Lyda Green, Sen. Charlie Huggins and Rep. Jay Ramras.
Tony Palmer, pipeline point man for TransCanada Corp., was there too.
Excellent cupcakes, by the way.
I agree with your sentiment. But I have to share something funny I read in the Kaylene Johnson biography of Palin. During her ultimately unsuccessful run for lieutenant governor, her little campaign staff, which basically consisted of a handful of her friends, had to figure out some cheap way to get their message out there. Here's one of the ideas they came up with:
[Palin's friend, Judy] Patrick ran off business-card size copies of Sarah's picture with a short campaign message on the back. "We were so low budget. Since she's so attractive, I thought we should use our assets. Everyone wanted her picture."LOL! See, the gov isn't above using her assets! Though she also said this in her interview with Vogue:
Developing a thick skin when it comes to comments about her looks has been part of the learning process. "I've been taken aback by the nasty criticism about my appearance," she says. "I wish they'd stick with the issues instead of discussing my black go-go boots. A reporter once asked me about it during the campaign, and I assured him I was trying to be as frumpy as I could by wearing my hair on top of my head and these schoolmarm glasses, but he said, 'No, that's not what I mean.' I guess I was naive, but when I hear people talk about it I just want to escort them back to the Neanderthal cave while we get down to business."
We guys are a little tormented by our desire to have guy fun with her obvious appeal and having to remind ourselves who (and what)the subject is.
It is one of things that we have to keep a lid on, but believe me I am well aware of how hot she is, that is why we have to keep the screws tightened down. I have to bite my tongue a lot before I post but I know that she is in the image building stage of her career and I know that one of her biggest challenges is how this sex appeal can be managed and not allowed to be turned into a weapon against her by the left.
LOL, mixed feelings is what I had when the left was trying to find sexy bikini pictures of her during the primary, I was on a bit of a roller coaster on that, the best I could do is hope that they didn’t find anything bad, but if they did, I sure wanted to see the evidence.
Other than that old pageant photo someone found, I doubt you'll ever see her in a swim suit. I don't think swimming is her thing. In the Johnson bio it's noted that she learned to swim as a kid in freezing cold lakes during the Alaskan summer. It didn't sound very fun. Even in Florida, she wore shorts poolside and a modest t-shirt. No scandalous photos for her.
Both Palin and her husband strike me as rather modest. Remember how during the 2000 election so much fuss was made over the candidates kissing their wives. I think it was a reaction in response to the Clinton infidelities. We wanted to see a happily married couple in the White House. So Gore planted a passionate kiss on Tipper's lips after his convention speech. And Bush never missed the opportunity to kiss his wife near a photographer.
And now in 2008, after eight years of having a happy and stable married couple in the White House, the public doesn't feel the need to see candidates kissing in public. We saw them hug their spouse, but no kissing.
Funny how that works.
Though he was certainly up there in years when he ran for the presidency in the 80s, he was still a very handsome man and he was always so charming. That's something everyone says about him. He was disarmingly charming. He even charmed Gorby!
I think Palin has the charm gene too. That's why it was so wrong for the McCain campaign to hide her from the press.
“I think Palin has the charm gene too. “
Without question she has “it” and I also think that she has a message to get out, I have this feeling that part of her drive comes from her relationship with God, that she has a positive, faithful, life affirming inner soul, and that is what she shares the most with Reagan.
Yes, I agree. It's at moments like this, when nobody is looking, that this lone photographer caught her praying and drawing inner strength from her relationship with God:
The photographer who was hired by the RNC to cover Palin (for history -- you know, campaigns do this sort of thing) said that Sarah and Todd Palin had a little ritual before she went on stage for each of her rallies. They would take a moment alone together and say a quiet pray. She snap a photo of it, and Greta Van Susteren showed it on her show when she interviewed this photographer.
I think Palin has a quiet and deep faith.
Rezkobama probably had Tofurkey for Thanksgiving or Ramadan whatever. Saracuda Rox!!
Pray for W, Palin and Our Troops
It will take care of itself. Looks diminish age. She'll get older and become a "handsome woman" instead of a "babe". Margaret Thatcher was very attractive as a young woman, and many of her colleagues noted that fact. When she got older she was simply "a handsome woman" and people were able to see her as a leader. Her youth and good looks helped Palin as much as they hurt her.
I think the most astute political observation about Palin was made by Gerry Feraro. Feraro clearly sympathized with Palin through out the campaign. Feraro said that in 1984 she heard so many women say to her that she reminded them of themselves and that was the reason why they wouldn't vote for her! They said that they didn't feel they were smart enough to be vice president, so they didn't think Feraro was either. Weirdly enough, Tina Fey said the exact same thing about Palin. She said that Palin was as smart as she was and she didn't think she was smart enough herself to be president! Some women can be very strange.
But, as I was saying, Palin's good looks might have hurt as much as they helped. She was so stunning that it was startling. I mean, this is what the award winning make-up artist they hired for her said about her:
I have said this to just about everyone I speak to...the Governor's skin is the most beautiful skin I have ever worked with. Of course, makeup always helps to create an even canvas, but the condition of her skin was flawless. I attribute it to the clean Alaskan air, lots of fresh fish and protein, and a good fitness regime.
Keep in mind that this is an artist who works on Hollywood celebrities.
Oh, hell, I spell Ferraro’s name wrong. I hate that! You can tell it’s getting late.
There is nothing wrong with Sarah being a good-looking woman. It is part and parcel of her personality, charm and charisma. All superstars have it. Sure Sarah shouldn’t flaunt her looks to detract from her message but I for one would not want her to discount them either. As Rush Limbaugh would say, “Sarah is comfortable in her own skin and she knows who she is and what she wants.” If anybody out there is uncomfortable or uneasy about how Sarah presents herself in public here’s my advice for you: “Find some ugly people to befriend or support-there are sure enough of them out there.”
