That these comments would come as a surprise to any conservative, any Christian or any evangelical is an indication of how willfully undiscerning we have become.
The President is a universalist. His stated worldview is incompatible with Biblical Christianity. I don’t know whether he is a Christian or not - I doubt it - but his comments should be a reminder to Christians that we must NEVER adopt pragmatism or unBiblical compromise in the selection of our leaders.
I'm not surprised or concerned about his comments. He is a human trying to understand God, and God's ways are not our ways. We all get it wrong at times.

President Bush has stated many times that he is a Christian. Your questioning his faith based on your own understanding is wrong. President Bush is not a spiritual leader, he's just a man that we elected to lead our country. No more, no less.
Doesn't the Vatican also hold this view? Do you not consider the Pope to be a Christian?

I would conclude from your statement above that a diest would be disqualified, according to your view of the US Presidency?
And second, to which type of Christians do you direct your reminder?
—Only to the type who believe just like you do, or to all types with quite a wide range of beliefs, many much like the President?
