Concerns about attacks in U.S. revived: Reaction to Mumbai, WMD report
The Athens Banner-Herald ^ | December 8, 2008 | Lee Shearer

Terrorist attacks that killed nearly 200 people in India over Thanksgiving are a reminder that terrorists still have their sights on the United States - sooner rather than later, according to two University of Georgia professors who study terrorism and weapons of mass destruction.

"The latest attack by Islamic terrorists in Mumbai demonstrates that that wing of radical Islam is alive and active," said Cham Dallas, director of the UGA Institute for Health Management and Mass Destruction Defense.

Dallas and Gary Bertsch, director of the UGA Center for International Trade and Security, say they agree with a bipartisan report released last week in Washington.

"World at Risk," written by the Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Destruction, says terrorists are very likely to attack the United States within five years.

And the terrorists will use weapons of mass destruction such as germ warfare or a nuclear bomb, according to the commission, headed by former Sens. Jim Talent of Missouri and Bob Graham of Florida.

Commission analysts briefed Vice President-elect Joe Biden on Tuesday on the report. "World at Risk" calls on the Obama administration to do more to defend against and get ready for germ warfare.

"We know that there are people out there who are trying to do this. With every day and week and month that goes by, we know that we cannot avoid this forever. Underline that there are people out there who are willing to do this," Bertsch said.

Indian authorities found two unexploded 10-pound suitcase bombs in Mumbai's main train station Wednesday, nearly a week after 10 gunmen set out on a killing spree in the city.

Workers had gathered the suitcase bombs up with luggage abandoned by passengers fleeing from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, once called Victoria Station.

One day, terrorists will explode nuclear bombs in one of the world's big cities, Dallas and Bertsch fear.

In fact, both said they are surprised terrorists haven't already used bioterror weapons or a nuclear "dirty bomb" that can send deadly radioactivity over hundreds of square miles.

"In the mind of a terrorist, there's not a lot of difference in putting a 20-pound bomb in a train station that can kill 100 people or a nuclear bomb that could kill a lot more," Bertsch said.

An attack using a weapon of mass destruction could kill 100,000 or more, Bertsch said.

For some Athens-area residents, the terror attacks in India held personal meaning. One of the targets was a Chabad House, a Jewish outreach center. The rabbi and his pregnant wife who ran the center were killed, along with three Jewish visitors.

Area Jews gathered in Athens' Chabad House on Thursday night for a memorial gathering, where about 50 people repeated the names of the Jewish victims.

"When you focus on a particular citizen and how much they gave to the world, it makes it a little more realistic," said Rabbi Michoel Refson, co-director of the Athens Chabad House.

The proper response to terrorism is doing good in the world, Refson said.

"I can't fight bioterrorism, but what I can do is spread good and kindness in the world, and we can all do that, which counterbalances the evil," he said.

"It is very close to me. It is tragic," said Mumbai native Vikram Dhende, a doctoral student at UGA.

But the attacks will not keep Dhende from returning to his hometown to visit friends and family over the university's Christmas break.

Terrorism now is a fact of life for people who live in Mumbai, the world's fifth-largest urban area with 19 million people, Dhende said. The city has experienced three major terror attacks in 15 years.

In 1993, a series of car bombings allegedly masterminded by organized crime don Dawood Ibrahim killed some 250 people. In 2003, a pair of car bombs in busy areas killed 52 people.

"Most of the big cities in the world are dangerous right now," Dhende said. "It can happen anywhere."

“The proper response to terrorism is doing good in the world, Refson said.”

Y’know, it’s attitudes like that that caused 9/11 in the first place. Terrorists will be neither impressed nor mollified by random acts of kindness, even those that implicitly or explicitly benefit Muslims. The only proper response to terrorism is to hunt down and kill the terrorists, then destroy their ideological spheres of influence.

When terrorists strike in this country, do not count on government agencies to protect you. You must take steps now to protect yourself and your family.

Know what to do...

I wish the environmentalists were more concerned with attaining “peace thru strength” and PREVENTING nuclear wars.
These bomb attacks would have more environmental impact in 1 millisecond than all the other things they concentrate on changing (car emissions, lowering corporate pollutants, etc.).

“I can’t fight bioterrorism, but what I can do is spread good and kindness in the world, and we can all do that, which counterbalances the evil,”

BS. The speaker could support and help elect officials who understand that there is a war on and who pledge to fight that war.

Maybe BO will make the same argument. Because he is redistributing income, he is spreading goodness and kindness. In fact, because he is the messiah, he cannot help but make things gooder and kinder now that he is president. Therefore, it’s OK if the terrorists nuke Atlanta. The Obama goodness and kindness onslaught kind of offsets the terror in a left-wing, fuzzy-thinking sort of way. Some good. Some bad. It all balances out.

Unless your son lives in Atlanta.

Nanny is the first bitch to cut and run when stuff goes wrong and relying on her can be catastrophic. Sometime after Katrina a huge area in Iowa was flooded, people who were prepared and equipped to survive as individuals, families and small groups set to work at once to reassemble their world. When the government finally showed up there wasn’t much to do except repair and roads and reestablish the postal service. We didn’t hear much about this in the media because of the very limited number of sob stories and public hand wringing.

Can we please go back to “An eye for an eye”, or “if you want to kill me, well then I should kill you before you have the chance”, or “You kill Americans and we make your lands glass parking lots”.

Sir, I am very disguted by the current state of world affairs. I digress, normally I would say that it seems we are alone, now I know we are.

I agree. I fully expect the Obamacrats to use any attack provided by their Islamofascist allies to disarm the population and instate measures that even Orwell could not imagine.

Of course the population of Iowa is different from Louisiana, and that’s the crux of what happened after Katrina. Iowans are used to rolling up their sleeves and doing what needs to be done. Most of those affected by Katrina, generations of them in fact, were accustomed to Nanny’s taking care of them from cradle to grave, so they stood around( some looted), while the water rose. The MSM will never mention this. Never, not in a million years.
