Cruise ship stranded in Antarctica

Chilean naval crews are waiting for the high tide on Monday to try to free a cruise ship stranded in Antarctica, after the first attempt to refloat the vessel was unsuccessful.

Attempts on Sunday to free the MV Ushuaia, which is stuck on the rock, tilted to one side and leaking fuel, proved to be more difficult than first thought.

Eleven Australians were among 120 people on board the ship who had to be evacuated to Argentina after the vessel was damaged when it hit a rock on Thursday.

US-based International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators executive director, Steve Wellmeier, said a Chilean naval tug had inspected the vessel, and sent divers to establish the extent of the damage.

"The propellers and rudders remain undamaged," he said in a statement on Monday.

Since the big global meltdown is imminent, maybe Al Gore can bring a light windbreaker and join them to wait it out. It will be sweltering any minute now.

LOL! Al would need a tent sized windbreaker for the girth.

I love these stupid trips where they con people with too much money into thinking it is an “expedition” or they are doing serious “science” by going to some dangerous damn place or doing something really stupid then things go wrong.

Just wait for global warming to melt all the glaciers and raise the sea level 100 feet. The boat should float free of the rock, and then sink.

Notify the Somali pirates about a free ship. They’ll get it loose in no time.

Interesting item. Pity the inevitable knee-jerk Al Gore comments in reply are all so unimaginative and totally off-point.

Looking it up here is the link to the cruise company site. Not a Carnival cruise but it looks interesting.

“The “Ushuaia” is a steel hulled, ice-strengthened vessel built originally for oceanographic research. She was recently converted to passenger voyages. Navigation and communication equipment has been newly upgraded and cabins were refurbished to provide comfortable accommodations for Antarctic passengers.”

Too bad about the grounding, but from time to time that happens with even the best vessels, such as the USS Missouri that once. Ship happens.

I wouldn't say "totally". A major theme of these cruises is a hang-dog view of the vanishing Antarctic. I'm pretty sure it was a ship of this same line that actually sank just last season after hitting an iceberg. This might seem ironic, but as we all know, any sort of unexpected iceberg activity is explained as a breakup of the ice sheets, etc. It'll be hard to credit an actual grounding to global warming, I should think.

When a US Navy ship is grounded the Captain is always told to find another job!

The captain sald that the effects of Global Climate Change, including rises in sea level, taken in retrospect, should not have been relied upon for purposes of navigation.
