CHICAGO - President-elect Barack Obama announced support Sunday for a short-term government bailout of the nation's carmakers that is tied to industry restructuring. He also accused auto executives of a persistent "head-in-the sand approach" to long-festering problems.

Obama said Congress was doing "the exact right thing" in drafting legislation that "holds the auto industry's feet to the fire" at the same time it tries to prevent its demise.

In an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press" and later at a news conference, Obama at one point suggested some executives should lose their jobs.

“Yes, if you drive a major corporation into the ground, you should lose your job.”

Yes, and then get a job in government ala Reuben.

I don't fault the auto industry for trying to innovate. Sure the Aztec, Pacer, Gremlin were considered dogs, but Pinto, Vega, Mustang, Camero, were all innovative ideas that took off. Some ideas sell, others don't. You never get a good idea without a few bad ones in between. With the sudden change in economics, it's no wonder they are hurting so bad. This is all governments causing, specifically on the part of the democrats.

On the suggestion of firing the CEO's. I recall Mulally turned Boeing around to profitable and Ford made him an offer and he took it to do the same for Ford. Mulally hasn't been at the helm of Ford long enough to be blamed for anything, good or bad.

I do blame Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Pelosie, Reid and lots of other democrats and the policies they instituted on energy and the regulation of business for the sudden collapse of the economy.

I just hope what's left of the Republican party has the testicular fortitude to stand up for conservative values and protect business. A poor man never hired anybody.

Gee, I sure am glad we can depend upon Husseins vast business and financial experience. I wonder what he thinks about people who went through a hundred million dollars + in something like, oh, the Annenburg thing, with no measurable positive results?

"Why would the Auto Executives sign a labor contract that they knew they could not afford? "

Many reasons - they're held hostage by union bosses who can shut down the entire process with sole source parts from one plant (like they did in Flint with brake linings) and just in time mfg keeping inventories to a bare minimum, partly greed - hard to say no to Joe line worker's request for a lower co-pay when the boss is pulling down $44 million a year, and part wishful thinking that things will always get better and if they can just hold on long enough for retirement, it'll be someone else's problem.

I blame both the auto executives and the UAW for the failure of the industry.

The UAW is to blame for demanding too much.

The auto executives are to blame for:

Giving in the UAW Demands

Electing to make vehicles that people did not want to buy

Designing and building vehicles that are of far lessor quality that cars made by Japanese auto companies

Not modernizing their facilities

Deciding to build large vehicles such as the Suburban and H-3 when it was obvious that the customer wanted more fuel efficient vehicles.

Selling crap like the Pontiac Aztec

Being dumber than the Japanese auto executives who had a much greater insight to the American market than the American auto executives.

Here are my thoughts. The Big Three Auto Makers troubles (problems) in order to do business.
. Steel is bought from Canada and have to pay a heavy duty on the importation of that steel.
. Other parts and materials come from other countries and have to pay a heavy price on them.
All because of Congress did this years ago.
Outsourcing parts to other countries to bring the price down and get stuck with bad parts or increase in delivery costs that can not be passed on.
Outsourcing assembly to ‘just in time companies’ that does and do not have unions in order to keep the price down but caves into their own union demands and then these ‘jit’ companies go out of business and it cost more to find another one to do business with.
Retooling too many times to keep up with laws that congress makes upon the automakers and to keep competitive with imports that get special treatment from their gov. and ours.
Then to help the consumers and auto dealerships to sell the auto the auto makers formed finance companies to help finance the autos. Then these finance companies started to buy and sell on the market, putting money in these bad risk insurance credits and lost most of their money and have to be bailed out with part of this 700bil bail out money that's being given out. Now the auto companies do not have any money or any way to a source of money and need a bridge loan from someone, however, their need is so large that only a gov. can give that need.
I think our government should help our auto makers because the government passes laws and demands so much from the auto makers in so short of time in how to make cars. The auto makers are using money for R & R, patents, and then get it stolen from them by foreign countries that doesn't have to do R & R and our government doesn't do anything about it.
Automobiles are being shipped here and sold from other countries that will not let our automobiles in their country to compete and that hurts our makers but the gov. will not do anything to help. So now the Three Big Auto Makers are in trouble. And most of the people want to just blame the excs. and the unions for the problem. I would say to look at the gov. and enviornamenal lobbyist, greed in the financial area and import and export laws before I would just say it's all the auto makers and unions fault that they are in the fix that they are in now.

You and I are in complete agreement. The only question is will Congress make it worse? I'd say they probably will.

Obama wants to bailout Kenya and other nations.

So he wants to reward his homeland for failure but not Americans?

"No one sighed a contract with a gun to their head"

Sure they did. The UAW shut down the entire company with a strike at one plant in Flint when GM could least afford it. Boeing just went through this process with the machineists. It blew any chance of having a Dreamliner out this year. I'd say that's better than a gun.

No one is forced to sign contract. However, one may find himself in a weak negotiating position and usually one finds himself in a weak negotiating position due to past mistakes.

I suggest some Politicians lose their jobs.

They did, in the last two years 12 Republicans have lost their Senate Seats and more than 50 GOP House members have lost their seats.
