Indian authorities fear suicide attempt by captured terror suspect

Ajmal Amir Kasab wants to die, and police are taking extraordinary measures to make sure the only alleged assailant captured alive during the terror shootings in Mumbai a week and a half ago stays alive, the newspaper Mumbai Mirror reported.

Officials in the Mumbai police force were quoted as saying that they are doing their best to ensure that 21-year -old Kasab does not commit suicide. The Mirror is the tabloid subsidiary of India's largest-selling newspaper group, The Times of India, and its reporting, unlike that of some other news media, has stood up well in the past 10 days.

Police are keeping Kasab in rooms without ceiling fans or other hanging objects that the penniless young man could use to kill himself, the paper reported.

"We frequently move him so no one knows his exact location," the unnamed sources told the Mirror.

Are ATS sleuths using right technique to make Kasav sing?

MUMBAI: Mumbai Police has had Ajmal Amir Kasav in its custody for more than a week but there are doubts about whether his interrogators have been able to extract from him all the information he knows.

Murmurs of the polices failure to break him were heard when a bomb was discovered by railway police at CST on Wednesday, a week after the strikes. Kasav, the sole terrorist captured alive in the Mumbai strikes, had not uttered a word about it even though it was either him or his partner who had planted it.

Intelligence experts that TOI spoke to said that questioning a terrorist is an art in which conventional methods used by police to interrogate normal criminals find no place. The key to questioning a terrorist is having what we call domain knowledge, said former Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief Ajit Doval. It means the interrogator needs to have complete knowledge of the terrorists background, his ideology, his modus operandi and contacts. Based on this information questions can be framed and the interrogator knows if he is being bluffed. He is not a common murderer where all you need to find out is where the pistol is hidden. The interrogator has to get into the mind of the terrorist, which is a highly skilled job, Doval said.

With men like Kasav you also have to remember that they have been tutored to talk in a certain way in case they are arrested. When a man talks freely, as Kasav has been doing, and gives a lot of general information, an interrogator has to be wary since it could all be tutored, said intelligence expert B Raman.

Thus intelligence officers say that while questioning a regular criminal is a hard-working interrogators job, a terrorist needs a smart interrogator. The infamous third-degree methods of the police often find no success with terrorists who are highly motivated. Thus they can give a number of false leads or spin tall tales which can send the investigators on wild goose chases for days on end.

Kasav can try every trick in the book to mislead the police. We need to ask why he asked for saline. He wanted to live, maybe so that he could later confuse the security agencies, Raman said. Regular methods will find no place in this case, Doval said.

A former state intelligence department (SID) chief said that not only terrorists but even murderers try to hide facts from the police. Why would they tell you the truth easily? They are highly trained and try to dodge the police but the police uses its techniques to get information out of the suspect, he said.

A retired senior police officer said that the terrorists are taught how to dodge investigators if they are caught. They try to hide information and it is all about their tolerance power. Several terror suspects caught in the past have told police that they were actually put through torture during training so that they could be aware of various torture techniques used by the police. Hence hardcore terrorists can withstand torture and that is why sometimes you will find them revealing information almost a year or two after their arrest, said the officer.

No problem. Feed him, provide medical treatment, and the balance of the time he can be secured to a gurney to ensure he doesn’t hurt himself or others.

Oh,...this poor penniless, alleged, assailant is being deprived. I wonder if he has some religious upbringing to fall back on?

Penniless young man? ... WTH?

Actually it would be rather simple to keep him alive.

Strap him to a rotating gurney, feed him intravenously (pork laden of course), and play 2008 U.S. presidential campaign messages 24/7 in his little ears.

By the time he is a year older he should be qualified to run for POTUS, and get elected.

Hmm, ‘alleged terrorist...penniless young man...etc.’. How come no mention of his motivation? Does this mean we have to worry about penniless young men grabbing AK47’s and turning into mass murderers in the US?

Make sure you get all the info you can out of him before you accidentally leave a rope and a chair in his cell.

It wouldn’t hurt to mention his motivation (!) ad nauseum, but it’s relevant to say that he’s penniless. He did it so that his family would get $1,250. Now, his family gets nothing, and he’s stuck in a jail in India, dependent on the much despised infidels to keep him alive.

In my estimation, he should be set up with a urinary catheter and a feeding tube (intravenous fluids only) and strapped to a gurney. Once every 3 months, he should be able to get up and walk around for a half hour. No food, no toilets, no prayer mats, no koran, no tv, no books. He should long for Guantanamo.

It’s not like he needs money where he is now. Why
do we care if he’s penniless?

Connect the urinary catheter to the feeding tube and recycle him until he’s GREEN.

Exactly! Keeping a frightened kid / failed warrior alive shouldn't be a huge task.
The free world still has plenty of information to extract from this loser.
