Good question, “from what?” My personal opinion is that he’s a non-person in desperate search for some identity. He has no apparent substance, intellectual or emotional, and is a “lost soul” searching for something that will anchor him in a reality with which he can be comfortable. I’m no psychiatrist but he strikes me as a person who has no essential personality or ‘core’ to his existence. Kind of like the ‘shadows’ of 21st century America who lack meaning, purpose and belief in anything beyond this transitory and ephemeral existence.
