WASHINGTON: The United States is dusting off a long-discarded proposal to declare Pakistan a state sponsor of terrorism. But with the Bush administration now in its final six weeks in office, a decision in this regard is being left to the incoming Obama government, sources said, contingent on corrective actions taken in the meantime by Islamabad to the satisfaction of India, US and other countries affected by Pakistan's toxic export of death.
US intelligence circles are now re-evaluating Pakistan's contribution to the war on terror, and the ISI's dominant role in the country and its ties with jihadi outfits, at the behest of the Bush administration . The White House itself lost faith in the Pakistan Army's bonafides several months ago which led to Washington's decision to withdraw support to military ruler Pervez Musharraf and back a new civilian government, officials and congressional aides who spoke on background explained. The decision to dump Musharraf was taken at vice-president Dick Cheney recommendation, they added, because of evidence that Pakistan was continuing to help Taliban elements attacking Nato forces.
Now the Bush administration is even more convinced that the Pakistani Army and its intelligence arm ISI, who still calls the shots in Islamabad, are continuing their toxic policies. But firm action against them is constrained by both the transition phase in Washington and the US dependence on Pakistan to maintain supply lines to its troops in land-locked Afghanistan. Officials are now re-examining options in this regard, particularly US leverage against Islamabad if Pakistan considers interdiction strategies.

Bump
Rogue elements
Before or after they get the next batch of F-16’s? </sarc>
India, get it going, before Obama gets into office.
I doubt it. My faith in Indian news sources is very weak. Nothing against India as a country, but their news media seems to get things wrong on a regular basis.
how will we be able to do anything in afghanistan?
Let India destroy Pakistan utterly, and we won't need to be in Afghanistan any more.
You might be on to something there...
India blogs and chat spaces are LIVID with hundreds of Indians posting who cannot STAND Condi Rice coming over and trying to restrain India.
And how would we like like it if India's foreign minister showed up in NYC a week after 9-11 and tried to "cool us down" and counseled us to go slow and not hit the Taliban and al Qaeda? Let's not be hypocrites and also meddle in sovereign nation's affairs, i.e. an ally that has been mercilessly attacked which included victims with American nationality!
We would tell them to get the hell out of our business.
Step one: Deny ALL Pakistan travelers access to the United States, I dont care, student, businessman, academic, whatever. Turn them back and notify airlines not to board Pakistan passport carriers heading for the USA. NOW.
Gee, I’ve always thought it was great policy for us to be supporting a rogue state running a narcoeconomy, a “secret” nuclear proliferation business, 20,000 feral jihadi madrassas, a lawless inner state (NWFP), a corrupt intelligence service (ISI), and on and on and on in the seething cauldron of dark and satanic evil that is Pakistan.
This is our “partner” in the “war on terror”, over and above the republican and democratic capitalist nation that is India.
For this debacle alone I will never, ever forgive the GWB Administration.

It is mind-numbing, revolting, insulting (to me as an American), and just plain shameful.
The Indians have been up against Islam for 1,400 years. They have been attacked *hundreds* of times since our 9/11, and many many more before that.
They know what to do.
Condi Rice should have stayed away and at best (worst?) made some phone calls.
Obama has said he will use the military to strike in Pak.
If he goes through with this decision, hard core left will freak.

IMO they’re about on par with our rapidly declining press in the USA.
Some that I’ve come to quasi-trust are The Times Of India, Mumbai Mirror, NDTV Live, The Economic Times, The Hindu, and a few more I can’t recall.
after watching India’s tepid response to terror all these years, I’d bet on Pakistan winning.
“India blogs and chat spaces are LIVID with hundreds of Indians posting who cannot STAND Condi Rice coming over and trying to restrain India.”
Indians now know what Israelis felt all these years.
Blowing up a train in Mumbai or Delhi killings hundreds has meant NOTHING to these Pakistanis and Indian muslim sympathizers.
Bump.
I'm sure they will manage somehow to muddle along knowing full well they will never, ever have your forgiveness...
