I'd be willing to bet that out of 100 graduating seniors this year, none would be able to tell me who Charles Martel was. Didn't he stop the Muslim invasion from advancing northward into France from conquered Spain?

Yes. Most credit him with saving the rest of Europe from Muslim hegemony, at the time.
