Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and state lawmakers may be banking long-term budget strategies on a revamped state lottery producing enhanced revenues.

But for now, sales from the existing California Lottery are sputtering compared to a year ago, the state lottery commission learned this week.

Lottery ticket sales, including Super Lotto Plus, Mega Millions, Fantasy 5 and scratcher games, dropped by 10 percent during the first four months of the fiscal year beginning July 1.

The $985 million in ticket sales represented a $105 million drop in sales compared with the same period last year.

Lottery officials blamed the economic downturn for the drop in sales and also cited the lack of big jackpots to inspire ticket purchases.

Lotteries are just a tax I don’t have to pay.

California should introduce $50 scratch-offs like they have in Texas.

Yeah, ya got a shot at some decent money, depending how the ball bounces.

I’d like one spin on that wheel..

I can’t believe the lowest prize isn’t at least 100K..

What a bunch of chintzes. I don’t even buy a lotto or megamil for less than a 50-75 mil these days.. ;-)

They had those way before the LOTTO. I believe they still have them too.

I never play any lotteries, but I love them because it is a tax on stupidity. Very few people really get that the odds for a person playing one ticket vs. 1000 tickets is pretty much the same, yet they will dump 100s of dollars every week because “if you don’t play you can’t win” and “someone has to win” mentality.

I think we should dump all taxes and make it all a lottery based system. :-)

You should buy one Lotto ticket every month. That way you’ll be able to say you’ve done your dumb deed for the month.

The lottery is the ultimate Government FU.

You pay to win and then the government takes over half the jackpot it’s supposed to pay you in the form of “income tax”....

With all the cheap labor in California, I can’t understand why it isn’t booming. Maybe they need cheap energy more than they need illegals and liberals.
