CA: Voters show little faith in governor, lawmakers

California voters are worried sick about the state's economy, but they don't believe Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Legislature can work together to solve California's fiscal problems, according to a new poll by the Public Policy Institute of California.

More than 70 percent of those surveyed listed the economy and the state budget as the top problems facing California, but two-thirds were unhappy with the way the state's leaders have faced the state's policy woes, including an $11.2 billion budget deficit for the current year.

"With 3 out of 4 voters putting the economy and the budget on top of their list of problems facing the state, there's really nothing else on people's minds," said Mark Baldassare, the poll's director. "They are certainly not optimistic about what the governor and the Legislature can accomplish."

Schwarzenegger's approval rating was at 42 percent, down from 60 percent two years ago, while the Legislature fared far worse - 21 percent of voters were pleased with the job state legislators are doing. That's only a tick above the 20 percent approval rating President Bush had in California in the institute's October poll.

But those figures exaggerate the conflicts without considering the many areas, such as the environment, in which the governor and the Legislature have worked together for California, said Assemblyman Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, a former San Mateo County supervisor who took office Monday.

Problem is the people in the Kalifornia keep electing liberals to office. Until fiscal conservatives are elected this is going to keep happening.

California's Democrats keep getting re-elected due to gerrymandering. It should be a wakeup call for the party - but it won't be.

It is time to stop spending money on unnecessary items.

No overtime for govt employees.

If taxes are raised, all state pay goes down X5 the tax raise.

No Cost of Living allowances unless approved by voters. Pay raises by merit only....no TIG raises. No new positions UFN.

Full accounting of schools, teachers and administrators.

There is no reason this state should be in the red.

It is a case of runaway greed and victim mentality; it’s everywhere I look in my ‘hood.

As I keep telling the Obama nutkases, “where is the money going to come from if you continue to punish businesses and individual success?”

The BIG goal for us conservatives should be to focus on taking back California. It is a HUGE amount of electoral votes and could counter the loss of several states.
