BEIJING: China on Thursday called upon India and Pakistan to intensify the process of dialogue and cooperation in order to safeguard peace and stability in South Asia.
"It is also in line with the requirements for regional peace and stability and the common expectation of the international community," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao while responding to a question regarding last week's terrorist attack in Mumbai.
China is showing signs it is worried about heightening of tensions between India and Pakistan because it might affect the delicate diplomatic balance in the region, sources said. Worsening of conditions between India and Pakistan on the issue of terrorism might draw in the United States and make it very difficult for Beijing to stay neutral.
It was in the fundamental interest of both India and Pakistan to strengthen dialogue and bilateral cooperation, Liu said. He did not discuss the situation emerging out of India's claims that the attack was conducted by Pakistan-based elements and it was time for Islamabad to take concrete action to end it.
Li Wei, director of anti-terrorist studies of China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, earlier said that the Mumbai attack will have profound influence on other nations in Asia. The attack also demonstrated that the usual measures taken by Asian governments on issues like early warning system and risk evaluation are not sufficient to be prepared for such brazen attacks, he said.
However, Li is of the view that terrorists who carried out the attacks on Mumbai came from within India and not from another country. He also castigated the India government for blaming Pakistan every time there was a major incident of terrorism in order to distract public mind away from its own shortcomings.

India has proof that the Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI was behind the deadly Mumbai attacks. Sources have told NDTV that ISI trained the attackers.
The names of trainers and the places where meticulous training took place are also known to the government, the sources said.
The United States is believed to have even more evidence some of which it has shared with India, they said.
The US has told Pakistan that they have proof of terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba’s role and sought the arrest of its chief Hafeez Sayeed.
Sources added it is hard to imagine that Pakistan army was not aware of Mumbai attack plan. They say Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari is not fully in control and the ISI and army are calling the shots
The deadly attacks on India’s financial capital left 178, including several foreigners, dead.
Chairman of US Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen, who was in Pakistan on Wednesday, is believed to have told his Pakistani interlocutors that Washington had enough evidence to show a Pakistani hand in the attack, the sources said. (With PTI input)
China neutral?
Hah, that’s a laugh.
The Chinese have the moral standing of a turd.
Could be, but has anyone noticed that China is beginning to sound like the “leader” of the world? “India & Pak, you hold talks and settle your differences.” “America, get your economy in order.” Kinda bossy isn’t it?
Perception is reality. The rest of the world sees that we just elected a communist and are banking on a post-America world of great powers.
IMO it is pretty obvious that China is standing by Pakistan, even though the article claims that it will take a US intervention to make it change its neutral stance
Realpolitik.
Rather unlikely. Irrespective of what happens, China will not get involved in this. If it openly sides Pakistan, it will appear to be on the sides of the terrorists and if it involves itself militarily, a lot of countries in East and SE Asia will get jittery about China. Couple that with a PO’ed US and you will have the potential to see trouble in the areas surrounding Taiwan and Vietnam. The only ones who will be smiling will be Russia. Both India and China will buy arms from them, the US and China will be technically at war with one another by choosing opposite sides and Russia has no stake in this war. It will sit it out, turn the TV on and get a bottle of Vodka and some Kiev Chicken to go with it.
In short, China’s involvement will make this war WW-III.
