Former Pakistan army officials trained Mumbai attackers: NYT 4 Dec 2008, 0911 hrs IST, IANS
NEW YORK: Former Pakistani army officials trained the terrorists who went on rampage last week in Mumbai, The New York Times said on Wednesday quoting unnamed Pentagon officials.
"A former Defense Department official said on Wednesday that American intelligence agencies had determined that former officers from Pakistan's Army and its powerful Inter-Services Intelligence agency helped train the Mumbai attackers," The New York Times said in its news report from Washington.
"But the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that no specific links had been uncovered yet between the terrorists and Pakistani government," it said, without providing any further details.
Pakistan has so far refuted Indian allegations, supported by the US, of having harbored these terrorists, who killed 183 people, several of whom were foreign nationals, and claimed that they are non-state actors.
The revelations by a former Defence Department official comes at a time when India has said that it has strong evidence and intelligence information that indicates the Mumbai attackers and their trainers came from Pakistan. It has also asked Pakistan to arrest and send to it 20 people wanted in India for terrorist activities. Pakistan has said that it would not extradite terror suspects.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who was in New Delhi on Wednesday to demonstrate American support to India, urged Pakistan to take on terrorists within its borders.
"We believe Pakistan has a central role to play in this, to make certain that these terrorists cannot continue to operate and operate in this fashion," Rice said in New Delhi.
Nice, so now the Pakistan and India ongoing feud might flare up.
Will you add me?
Please and thank you.
former ISI officers may have helped train the Mumbai attackers? I’m shocked.
POTUS MUZZIE HUSSEIN is connected to the ISI and is sympathetic

Indian Muslims are seen during a condolence meeting in Mumbai. India has warned that all options are open in dealing with Pakistan after last week's attacks on Mumbai, as the US pressured Islamabad to show urgent cooperation with the probe. (AFP/Sajjad Hussain)
“unnamed Pentagon officials”
Once again, the NYT is doing its part to promote journalistic standards of the highest order.
Well they were probably “Rogue” former ISI...../s
Also, there are very few "retired" Paki military officers. Many thousands of active duty actually work for private employers. They double-dip, building up what is held in the Paki military as sacred: seniority. After 20 years they are given Paki military land and lots of benefits.
Any "trainers" are likely still on the Paki miltary payrolls.
From the blogosphere
Sure! You’re added.
Just FYI though, given the chaotic nature of Pakistan, the list can be fairly high-volume at times (like now).
Hellzapoppin’ or will be soon at this rate..
Pakistan is the weakest link it seems in the effort to fight terrorism at its roots.

ISLAMABAD: The US has given four names of former ISI officials, including Lt-Gen (retd) Hameed Gul, to the UN Security Council to put them on the list of international terrorists.
Government of Pakistan is aware of this move, which is considered here by some as part of an international conspiracy to target the ISI, whose reformation has already been sought by Washington.
—snip—
The attackers are supposed to have been Al Qaeda guys, although the “Deccan Mujahideen” that claimed responsiblity for the attacks seems to be a basically non-existent organization. Nobody had ever heard of it before this incident.
What is your motivation in protecting these guys? Your stand almost amounts to saying the Pakistani establishment (government, military, ISI) is definitely not involved. Are you sure?
We need to forget about "al-Queda". Al-Queda is just one of the components of the Global Jihad. The point of al-Queda was to be a conduit of funding between a bunch of wealthy donors (the Golden Chain organization) and various jihad groups. Take away al-Queda, and you still have the wealthy donors and the various jihad groups, and new middle organizations will be formed.
The real target is the Global Jihad.
No, and I never claimed anythign like that. I simply said that there might be other possibilities, according to some sources over there. Certainly if you ask "qui bono?" ("who benefits?"), the RSS is about the biggest beneficiary of the attack.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
That's like saying that the biggest beneficiary of the 9-11 attack were the fundamentalist Christians in the USA. Damn those Christian fundamentalists!
Where do you dudes get your logic from? It's never your fault, is it?
--- Airliner hitting a building - CIA Agents!
--- 9/11: CIA- Mossad conspiracy!
--- Osama Bin Laden: Never existed!
Tell me: why is it never the fault of the Muslim world?
And BTW, your posts reveal for who you are so don't bother giving the usual spiel.
Only loons like you believe that wacky idea. We know very well who carried out the 9/11 attacks. --- 9/11: CIA- Mossad conspiracy!
See above. --- Osama Bin Laden: Never existed!
Where did you ever get that stupid idea? He's either in hiding (DEEP in hiding) or dead. Either way, he is much less effective, thank God.
