I thought from the beginning they were just dirt poor, uneducated slobs that were given a uniform and a bit of cash.

Yeah, because one may think they’re given cameras so they can take pictures before they’re shot.

“I first thought that they had .577 cal Martini Henry rifles!
The type used in the film ZULU.
They still make ammo for them?”
The .577 Snider was the precursor to the .577/450 Martini Henry, which was the rifle used in “Zulu”. You can get .577 ammo for about $120 for a box of 20, or there may be specialty manufacturers who could make it up for you.
The.577/450 is actually the Snider cartridge necked down to what was considered “small caliber” .45. I understand that ammo is available for it as well, but is pricey.

Napul has surplused out thousands of Martini rifles in the last two years. Seval places in the USA are selling them for around $500. And yes there is ammo out there....

Hooligans!I was thinking they might have been Thugs, trying to live up to their ethos of killing without spilling blood.
