Dear Nea Wood,

Perhaps you're thinking of former Mayor Marion Barry of Washington, DC and his run-in with a woman with 17 children. The issue had been over public housing, which at the time was in very short supply.

The mayor was giving an outdoor press conference, and the woman approached and started to rebuke the mayor because she and her pig sty of 17 were all holed up in a local motel because there wasn't sufficient public housing for them. She actually had a husband who, if I recall correctly, had actually helped her spawn two or three of the rugrats.

So, she says to the mayor, “Why don't you get me an’ my family some decent housing??”

And he replied back just as sharply, “Why don't you stop making babies??”

And then the stuff hit the fan.

She made the round of talk shows, damning the mayor at each stop, screaming that the mayor was trying to oppress her fertility (I'm not making any of this up) and what have you. I almost felt sorry for ol' Marion.

The city went out and bought her a seven bedroom house. I think it was worth, at the time, something like $700K, which would be well into seven figures by this time.

Within a year, the house was entirely trashed.

I don't mean that there was a lot of trash in it.

I mean trashed.

All the appliances were ripped out. All the fixtures were ripped out (faucets, toilets, you name it). There were huge holes in the drywall all over the house. The house had to be condemned.

I would say something but I know I would be called a racist.
