1 in 5 young adults has personality disorder

CHICAGO (AP) - Almost one in five young American adults has a personality disorder that interferes with everyday life, and even more abuse alcohol or drugs, researchers reported Monday in the most extensive study of its kind.

The disorders include problems such as obsessive or compulsive tendencies and anti-social behavior that can sometimes lead to violence. The study also found that fewer than 25 percent of college-aged Americans with mental problems get treatment.

One expert said personality disorders may be overdiagnosed. But others said the results were not surprising since previous, less rigorous evidence has suggested mental problems are common on college campuses and elsewhere.

Experts praised the study's scope - face-to-face interviews about numerous disorders with more than 5,000 young people ages 19 to 25 - and said it spotlights a problem college administrators need to address.

Study co-author Dr. Mark Olfson of Columbia University and New York State Psychiatric Institute called the widespread lack of treatment particularly worrisome. He said it should alert not only "students and parents, but also deans and people who run college mental health services about the need to extend access to treatment."

Counting substance abuse, the study found that nearly half of young people surveyed have some sort of psychiatric condition, including students and non-students.

Personality disorders were the second most common problem behind drug or alcohol abuse as a single category. The disorders include obsessive, anti-social and paranoid behaviors that are not mere quirks but actually interfere with ordinary functioning.

I got the horse right here
The name is Paul Revere...

There is a reason I refer to puberty as temporary (hopefully) insanity.

Add in all the ridiculous cultural/sociological/pop psychological nonsense these kids are programmed with, (despite deep down knowing better themselves), and it is no wonder they are screwed up.

You nailed it, Bushbacker! Columbia may be the most far left institution in the nation. Any psychological “research” conclusions coming out of there should be viewed with suspicion by the culture at large because underlying such results, in my view, is some kind of left leaning political goal. Widespread use of mind altering drugs is very dangerous in a society lurching towards socialism or worse. In fact, we are already at a high level of drug use in America..We cannot comprehend the number of people addicted to pain killers, which may now be a bigger problem than heroin abuse..Add to that the large number of kids and adults on antidepressants and benzodiazepines and I think you do get an effect at the polls because judgment and reasoning is effected in many people. I have seen these effects in family members on these medications. One relative told me that she needs the med but she no longer can feel really sad or really happy about anything. Her emotions are blunted, therefore, she does not respond to problems as she once did. She used to be a leader..Now, she has retreated. We need to be very wary of this kind of thing because any kind of behavior which doesn't please the ideas of the far left could be diagnosed as abnormal and then, neutered with chemicals. Physical restraints are very tightly regulated in the medical setting. Psychological restraints should be viewed the same.

Actually, it’s all part of an internationally televised show in which you are starring but are unaware of.

I would bet the percentage is higher in the US Congress.

And in “the Office of the President-Elect” I’d say it’s 100%. Pathological narcissim at a minimum.

Broken Homes, Broken Hearts, and No faith in anything except for Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll. What do you expect.

Our society is descending into a miasma where what once was called character is now seen as backwardness.

Where one party has a permanent pass on the most corrupt and depraved behavior and the other, trying to be "better" sees this as something that cannot be dealt with.

As some point, you just have to draw the line and defend it.

In the last week,. a Catholic Bishop said he would be willing to die to end the practice of abortion in the US. When this becomes not words said in the heat of the moment, but instead the conviction of honest people that our children and our society can only be saved by folks who will not look the other way any longer. Then perhaps, these children will have a hope of being saved from lives of misery and dependence.

Related to that is the notion that Socio pathology is, to a degree, rewarded in our society.

For example, a person with narcissistic personality disorder is, often, a successful business starter. Steve Jobs is the example I think of most often.

The problem is, we can often mistake some of the traits of narcissistic personality disorder for socio pathology. The example that comes to my mind is Andrew Fastow, former CFO of Enron. In Fastow's case, I think it can be argued that he certainly knew that his plan would not only harm the company and people but did it with no regard for either.

This is a “make work” article by the shrinks. Anyone going to see one of these quacks will be told “There’s nothing wrong with you that an expensive course of treatment can’t prolong.” (Thanks to Monty Python for that line).

Modern psychiatry is about where medical science was before Ignatz Semelweis developed the germ theory of disease. And about as helpful.

Given my experience with “Generation Y” in the workplace (I do recruiting), I’d say this is spot on. But the blame is solely on the parents. We have a generation that reaches adulthood with the mentality of a 14-year old. We have stories of 24-year olds who get in trouble at work and the next day mommy calls up to chew out the boss!

The “personality disorder” is immaturity, and it’s much more pronounced in this group. Our firm even did a long study on it to help employers deal with them. I have spoken to HR managers at large firms who refuse to hire from this age group because their experiences have been so bad. And we’re talking people who survived Gen X.
