U.N. chief: Special commission to investigate Bhutto killing
UNITED NATIONS (CNN) — U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon plans to create a special commission to investigate the killing of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, a United Nations spokeswoman said Wednesday.
Ban, who was in Pakistan for his first official visit, “intends to establish an independent commission of inquiry,” said spokeswoman Marie Okabe.
The decision came after “extensive consultations” with the Pakistani government and members of the U.N. Security Council, Okabe said. The U.N. announced Ban’s intention to pursue such a commission in December, on the one-year anniversary of Bhutto’s death.....

Last spring, Richard Holbrooke outlined his prescription for what ails Pakistan in the Washington Post. In U.S. dealings with Islamabad, Holbrooke argued, “the message should be clear and consistent: democracy, reconciliation, the military out of politics, a new policy for the tribal areas—and more democracy.”
It was a high-minded solution that would work at 30,000 feet. But the Holbrooke who arrives in Islamabad on Feb. 9, not as a columnist but as President Barack Obama’s special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, will have to deal with ugly reality on the ground.......

High Stakes for Obama at Weekend Security Conference
The Obama administration is facing its first big international test this weekend as Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. heads to a conference in Europe in the face of a confrontational stance from an old cold war adversary.
Administration officials have concluded that Russia pressed Kyrgyzstan, a former Soviet republic, to close the American base in that country, which they interpret as a shot across the bow. The base is crucial to the American-led fight in Afghanistan that Mr. Obama has identified as his central national security objective. Mr. Obama plans to deploy as many as 30,000 additional troops to Afghanistan over the next two years; shaky overland supply routes through Pakistan would make it difficult for the United States to adjust to the loss of the base, in Manas, Kyrgyzstan.
It was Mr. Biden who warned publicly in October that Mr. Obama’s mettle could be tested early in his administration by some kind of an international crisis. Now, a speech that Mr. Biden is scheduled to deliver Saturday before leaders and defense officials from Europe and Asia will be watched closely to determine what tack America’s fledgling leadership will take regarding Russia......

perators of a British-based Islamic website are speaking out against a charge in a British tabloid that some of its users are extremists targeting leading British Jews. The newspaper story said the alleged “targeting” is in retaliation for Israel’s invasion of Gaza. However, the site continues to carry material advocating the destruction of Israel.
A 2006 posting reads in part (www.ummah.com/forum/showthread.php?t=76374), “The Followers of Ahl Us-Sunnah wal Jamma call upon all Muslim individuals, groups and organizations to show their support verbally, physically and financially=2 0to the Mujahideen who are struggling against the fascist entity called Israel so that it can be destroyed once and for all thereby liberating the land of Palestine, the Golan Heights and the Gaza Strip which belong to the Muslims and allowing the Muslims to implement Islamic law.”
The rhetoric continues, “The obligation to engage in Jihad (holy war) is Fardun Ayn (an individual duty) today upon every responsible Muslim, according to their capability, wherever they are. Let us therefore respond to the call of Allah ... and his Messenger Muhammad ... and let the enemies of Islam and the Muslims go to hell.”
However, following a complaint, Britain’s Press Complaints Commission (PCC) is looking into the Jan. 7 front-page story in the Sun newspaper headlined “Terrorists Target Sugar,” with quotes by anti-terror researcher Glen Jenvey.......

‘Give them the Islamic message,’ demands New York-based extremist
JERUSALEM – A U.S. jihadi website has issued a series of videos targeting the New York headquarters of Chabad, a Jewish outreach movement, just two months after the group was rocked by a deadly terrorist attack in Mumbai, India.
The videos also ask viewers to “give the Islamic message” to Yeshiva University, a Manhattan-based Jewish college, as well as “Jewish Federation buildings all over the U.S.” in response to the institutions’ purported funding for Israel amid its recent offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Realizing his statement may attract the attention of U.S. law enforcement agencies, Khattab delivered a direct message to the NYPD, CIA and FBI: “You can put me in jail for the rest of my life. As long as I got that information out there for people, I did something. I didn’t sit on my behind.”
Khattab also lashed out against any website that may pick up on his statement.
“It just attracts Drudge, the JAWA report, Atlas Shrugs (blog), and Robert Spencer (Jihad Watch blog) and just other whining little queers and stuff like that.”
But he celebrated what he said is his website’s non-Muslim following of “progressive Americans, socialists, anarchists, communists ... people who can really contribute, they give us dialogue and send us nice e-mails.”
Khattab, a 39-year-old New York taxi driver who converted to Islam from Judaism, said he launched RevolutionMuslim.com with the mission of “preserving Islamic culture,” “calling people to the oneness of God” and asking them to “support the beloved Sheik Abdullah Faisal, who’s preaching the religion of Islam and serving as a spiritual guide.......

UK Police has uncovered a terrifying plot by al Qaeda to murder Britsh Members of Parliament.
Police were last night urgently probing the plan, hatched on a website used by terrorists and their supporters. Home Secretary Jacqui Smith was informed amid calls for extra protection for all 646 MPs.
Security sources said the threat could require measures not seen since the height of the IRA attacks, the Daily Star reported.
The plot was found on a password-protected Internet message board on a site, which has carried an interview with Osama bin Laden’s No.2 Ayman al Zawahiri......
