I thought the tradition in Canada was the party with most seats governed. The minority govt could be taken down on a confidence vote, but the other smaller parties did not attempt to govern via coalition.

The combined Left has an absolute majority. They can probably take down the Conservative government if they want to. It would be a coup d'etat - and its all quite legal.
