But the debate took on a tone that undermined the true greatness of America, which is that we welcome people who want to work hard and support their families.”

Translation: I still mean it. Opponents were racist bigots. My paymasters may want to depress wages more, but they are “great”. We are not “welcoming” with only letting in one million people a year.

You said a mouthful right there. The word "sustainable" gets bandied about in politics quite a bit of late but you never hear it in reference to bringing in a million immigrants a year. Regardless, it is not sustainable and we are going to get our education on this issue at the "School of Hard Knocks"
