“The solution, analysts say, is to get Pakistan’s civilian leadership to exert control over its hard-line military and intelligence which functions on its own existential agenda.”

Easier said than done.

It sounded totally ignorant at the time, but maybe Hussein was right. We might have to invade parts of Pakistan where the Taliban are. Not to occupy, only destroy and leave. If Pakistan completely stops it’s efforts in the area, I see little other choice.

There is going to be a big war in Asia. It will encompass India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, the Gulf States, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, and possibly, Somolia. The longer it takes to start, the better the chances that it will go nuclear. It will be horrific, millions may die, but it will be a chance to settle things down in that area for some time.

Some senior ISI officials need to a) have some of their families held hostage or b) get sent to the wall unless things improve. It's that simple and that hard. Follow up with a few of these in Waziristan -

That’s NO THREAT, if you’re ready for action. If Pakistani troups leave the area where Al Quaida is, US troups move in!

Perhaps as long as a thousand years...

Someone explain to me how Mohammed is really any different than Charles Manson.

A matter of scale perhaps?

Anyone wonder how Obama will deal with this? Will he invade Pawk-e-stahn, as he said during the campaign?

Odds are Mohammed didn’t have a swastika tattooed between his eyes.

As I said, “really any different...”

I can hardly think of a less fundamental difference than ink on the surface of the epidermis.

Possibly. He has something to prove in the way of national security credibility, so he may just turn out to be far more aggressive and less of a milquetoast than Bush about killing vast numbers of evil ragheads.

Democrats can get away with much more than Republicans, and are hardly ever criticized, when it comes to dealing with our enemies.

There will be no weeks upon weeks of front-page Abu Ghraib stories during the Obama reign, no matter what our troops do.

Well, that was about the only difference I could think of.

I was thinking maybe “Manson didn’t write a book” but it turns out he wrote a book, too.

As afghanistan is landlocked,...supplies for our Afghanistan troops could be a problem.

It looks like our military has been planning ahead.

Screw The Khyber Pass.

But can we really trust Russia for a long term commitment to living up to the deal from their end. And just how efficient is their Siberian railway system. Do they move freight with no problems during the winter.
Plus the Paki's depend on us for so much aid, plus growing hopes in acquiring weapon systems from us. They can be convince to maintain current levels of transportation I would think. Of course if they drift off into far left field I guess we have little choice but to explore alternate methods of getting ever growing amounts of supplies to our NATO forces.
Supply logistics where a walk in the park regarding the Iraqi campaign compared to what we face in Afghanistan, especially if it is decided to really beef up our forces in A.

telling Washington that it will have to withdraw some 100,000 Pakistani troops posted on its western borders to fight the al-Qaida-Taliban and move them east to the Indian front if New Delhi makes any aggressive moves.

I have great sympathy with the grief of the Indian people -- and others who have lost loved ones in Mumbai -- but this is hardly "blackmail." It is reality.

Go ahead. It's not like they're worth a tinkers damn anyway. Besides, once the Pak military is out of the way we can start bombing those areas in earnest.

And while the Indians are attacking from the other side the Pak military will be far too busy to interfere with us.
