You mention the "ick" factor. Two key voting blocs, that put Obama over the top, would have been particularly susceptible to that, repulsed by men on the "down low" as they are.
I remember a few, very left-leaning friends from college, freaking out when we took a road trip north once ... they hated the very idea of being in "fascist, corporatist" Delaware.
