The default, biological instinct is to move away from danger.

Not at all. I was reading about the men who came through a scorched area and happened across a bird. Incinerated, but underneath it's wings were live unharmed chicks.

It's called "fight or flight".Many different variables determine outcomes.

Clint Eastwood captured some good righteous anger that is in our instinct.

And Alvin York struggled with this in real life.

Alvin came out of a rural, gun owning culture, and although his family was quite pacifist, the hill culture of Scott-Irish was anything but. Then of course, he did go through military conditioning, and was surrounded by his social group that had self selected themselves to fight. It wasn’t that much of a jump for him.
