The fireplace police descended on the Bay Area on Wednesday.
For the first time ever, residential fires are illegal under a new law, passed in July, that bans home burning on winter season Spare the Air days.
The first such ban took effect at noon. Seventy inspectors from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District planned to spend the day and evening patrolling residential neighborhoods, looking for telltale chimney wisps.
Violators will get warnings by mail. Repeat offenders face fines of as much as $2,000.
The fireplace police say they are determined to keep law and order in the living room.
"We're serious," said district spokeswoman Kristine Roselius. "This is a major health threat. The weather conditions are such that smoke is trapped closer to the ground and anyone with respiratory problems will have a hard time breathing."

The story, or the cartoon attached as a comment?
These people need to go out and get jobs. They have too much time on their hands. These are the same type of people that use to hang witches in Salem.
They HAD to hang 'em. There was a ban on BURNING witches...
At least I would have something to start my next fire with........
The Vatican has been warned that they have to find a better way to announce the selection of a Pope.
In related news, the Vatican has decided NOT to move to SF.

Next, compile a list of the politicians responsible for this pack of unelected bureaucrats. Names, titles, addresses and phone numbers. It will come in handy later.
Any FReepers here who live in San Fran? I’ve got a fog machine I’ll send you so you can put it in your fireplace and drive these new smoke nazi’s nuts chasing fires that aren’t.
Its so cute how the Liberal mind keeps using the Sesame Street rhyme method of communicating. Montessori meets grown-up time!
The scary part isn’t that governments do this, because all governments try and take as much power as they can. The scariest part is that people go along with it.
Gee, the list seems to be growing...
Don’t smoke, don’t eat trans-fats, wear a seat belt, don’t burn a fire place, don’t, don’t, don’t don’t.
(I could probably go on with an itemized list, but it depresses me.)
You *could* come up with a better business plan than to send a fog machine to SF :-) I was there a week ago, and you could cut the fog with a knife. Then I was returning home two days ago and the visibility was 10 feet at best. Took me 10 minutes to cover 2 miles (the road is narrow here.)
Currently I see only fog outside, and it's pretty dense too. I can burn as much wood in the fireplace as I want, nobody is going to come here and nobody can see my house from the road, and the gate is solid steel. But people who live down there, 2 miles and 2,000 feet below me, in San Jose, will be harassed.

Great because you did it!

My grandmother is 81 and needs oxygen at times due to her asthma. While she doesn’t allow [cigarette] smoking in her home, they build a fire everyday. This law is ridiculous.
