The President-Elect, Talking Turkey
Washington Times ^ | November 27, 2008 | Dana Milbank

Posted on 11/28/2008 12:06:10 AM PST by fishhound

President-elect Obama had nearly finished his third news conference in as many days yesterday when he decided to favor his audience with one more tasty morsel of information about the just-announced members of his economic team.

"I want you to know that both Paul and Austan have special turkey-cooking recipes, if anybody out here needs some advice on how to make the ideal turkey," Obama offered.

Let's leave aside the question of whether credible cooking advice could come from Carter Fed Chairman Paul Volcker or University of Chicago economist Austan Goolsbee. Let's also look beyond the question of whether, at a time when the economy has gone afoul, we want it run by people who specialize in making "the ideal turkey."

The real news is that Obama had clearly run out of things to say.

It is a case of being careful of what one asks for. When Obama went to ground for about 10 days, making no public announcements and furtively slipping in and out of the gym, pundits wondered what had become of the "transparent transition" he promised. But Obama buried that complaint this week with an extraordinary blitz: His second, third and fourth news conferences set a new record for a modern president-elect, and he still has nearly two months to go.

But Obama is not in charge yet -- a point he makes with such regularity it seems to have become a tic. And so, after he makes the day's personnel announcements, voices concern about the economy and speaks vaguely about his plans, there isn't much left to say....

"First of all, that's not the topic," Obama instructed Henry.

Wonder how long until the press gets tired of Obama thinking that because he's in charge he can speak to them with such impunity.

As soon as more of that occurs and it will. And it dawns on them(media) that they are just pawns and it doesn’t matter to the OBO machine who they tell to heel and how. They will look dumb.
And America will see it.
And they’ll regret the passes they gave him and Biden.

...my Muslim faith, 57 states,...

speed bumps.

I can't read his name without recalling the night he was on Olberman's show dressed in hunting gear, to mock Dick Cheney.

It was historic--the first and only time Olberman wasn't the biggest a-hole on his show.

Well, one thing's for certain. Our goose is cooked.

He isn't even the "President-elect" until voted in by the Electoral College. Presumptuous twits.

Didn’t have an appointment candidate that can do a curry turkey. lol

By the way...do you think at Thanksgiving he will pardon a white turkey...or will he go back to the pardoning of the black wild turkey...like Truman did, I saw some photos of it today.

Loaded question.

I’m outta here.

if I was president, I wouldn’t pardon any turkeys. I don’t want to give even an inch to those PETA wackos.

The only thing that should come out of his mouth is “here’s my real birth certificate”.

I don’t know. I hope not. When the President Elect starts talking back to reporters like he’s Don Rumsfeld (eg “first of all that is not the subject of this conference, and second of all if I didn’t assemble a group of know-it-alls you would be howling about it”) the press might begin to turn on him the way they put the screws to Rummy.

I hope the press presses this President on whatever subject they think important at the time. A free and fair press is very important, and seeing as how the media choices are more and more limited it is ever more important that they ask the tough questions and expect real, honest answers.

With the current lapdog MSM, I suspect they would consider a tough question to be something like, "Pres. Obama, do you recommend an aluminum foil 'tent' when cooking the turkey?"
