State Recount: Franken Loses in Bid to Add Ballots

The state Canvassing Board's rejection of Al Franken's bid to count ballots stirred new rancor.

Democrat Al Franken suffered a setback Wednesday when the state Canvassing Board unanimously turned down his campaign's request to include rejected absentee ballots in the U. S. Senate recount, prompting a Franken attorney to threaten to go all the way to Washington if necessary to get them considered.

"Whether it is at the county level, before the Canvassing Board, before the courts, or before the United States Senate, we don't know yet. But these votes will be counted," said Marc Elias, the campaign's lead recount attorney, who added that he won't appeal the board's decision.

Senate Majority leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., termed the Canvassing Board's decision "cause for great concern" and called on Minnesota officials to "ensure that no voter is disenfranchised."

what do you want Pawlenty to do?....its not his job to stick his nose into the election...

almost 1/2 the people voted for the frankenstein.....he knows this....he needs to be re-elected someday too.....

trying to run roughshod over a process he has no business interfering with is one way to lose that election.....

we are not rats....

Moi? Some could say my views bordered on Pollyanna, pre-election.

Running Franken speaks volumes about the lefties. It is proof they don’t think highly of themselves.

"If Coleman pulls this off, he deserves the Horatio Cocles Award for the Century."

Actually, he deserves a swift kick in the a^^ and a reminder that he would have won in a landslide if he wasn't such a RINO squish.

They did it in the 1980’s when a NH Republican won a narrow (two vote?) victory. The Senate would not seat him and the Democrat won the special election.

He’s a RINO???

Well, I guess that explains it. When will these jerks learn that playing up to the enemy has no reward?

It does have this authority

The Supreme Court ruled otherwise in the case of Adam Clayton Powell.

Well, I do think Coleman is going to win this and will keep the seat.

If you recall, I began last year saying, "I won't get fooled again: the polls are right." But over time I was persuaded by several Freepers that, in fact, they were wrong. Guess what? I hope I don't get fooled a third time.

Not quite. Remember there was a strong third party candidate in the race who go something like 15% of the vote.

what do you want Pawlenty to do? ... it's not his job to stick his nose into the election...

He is the chief executive of the government under whose auspices the counting and recounting of the votes is being done. He can in a general way call for fairness and integrity in the process, which he likely has already done. He can also go further and warn that anyone involved in the process who strays from that standard will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, which he hasn't done.

Uh...sorry? He is the Governor right? Would I be incorrect in thinking that, as Governor, one has the obligation to speak out if a pornographer was stealing a US Senate seat? I mean, a Senate seat isn’t like School District Librarian is it?

It’s a Senate seat. There are only 50 of them in the entire country. If I was Governor and ballots were being found in Democrat operatives cars— I think I might look into that.

Tim Pawlenty hasn’t. He doesn’t know if the guy was a Republican or a Democrat. He has no idea. He doesn’t know anything. He’s too busy connecting with people at Sam’s club to do his job.

A SENATE SEAT IS BEING STOLEN. He is the Governor. He has an obligation to say something, such as “A Senate seat is being stolen.”

Instead he’s too busy watching out for his own reelection, which is ironic, as his cowardice will end his national political career.

[Pawlenty] has an obligation to say something, such as "A Senate seat is being stolen."

I agree that he seems too lackadaisical, but then again, there may be nothing illegal about that "ballots in the car" incident. There seems to be a cover story which may have some validity. And it seems - at this point at least - that things are being done honestly, what with Franken's desire to reinstate the purged absentee ballots rejected by the Canvassing Board.

What Pawlenty can do is make it clear that any state election officials who pull any fraud in this recount process will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

BTW, there are 100 Senate seats, not 50.

I'm ambivalent about Pawlenty making any statements, only because he would be accused of acting in a partisanship manner. His statements would have no influence over the State Canvassing Board overseeing the challenged ballots, and would also have no impact on the re-count process, where the issue of challenging ballots is up to each campaign.

This is going to end up in court, unless Franken has an ounce of class within (and we all know he doesn't) and folds after challenged ballots are reviewed.
