Could Iowa Conservatives Undermine GOP in 2012?
Associated Press ^ | 11/20/08

"We've gone so far to the social right, particularly in caucus attendees, that unless you meet certain litmus tests you have a very difficult time competing in Iowa," said Doug Gross, the party's 2002 gubernatorial nominee. "I think you'll have some candidates who won't compete here unless they perceive that's somehow changed."

David Roederer, who headed John McCain's Iowa campaign, agreed.

"I would not encourage a moderate to come right now and participate in the caucuses," Roederer said. "It is a danger for the party, and it is a danger for the future of the caucuses."

Or as conservative state Rep. Christopher Rants put it: "Huckabee won the caucuses, but he couldn't go the distance. Maybe some people will bypass Iowa."

Of course, candidates who meet the standard laid down by social conservatives seem eager to swoop into the state. Later this week, 2008 caucus winner Mike Huckabee will hold events in the state as part of a book tour, and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal has planned appearances a couple of days later.

Both are targeting those social conservatives, a competition that's intensified with the emergence of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Palin was little known in Iowa until last summer, when she was named presidential candidate John McCain's running mate. She drew big crowds at events in several Iowa cities in the last six weeks of the campaign.

"She connected with a lot of people," Roederer said. "The person who has to be the most concerned is Huckabee. He was the only social conservative back then."

In a telephone interview, Huckabee played down speculation that he was starting early in Iowa due to conservative pressure from Palin.

well, what are the social conservative issues? Abortion, gay marriage, private school choice and that’s it.

How about we allow voting in states based upon percentage vote the Republican Party got in the last general election:

If OK votes 76 (Hypothetical) % Republican President in 2008, then shouldn’t they vote ahead of NH (once again hypothetical) if they only vote 46% Republican Presidential in the General 2008 elections? Not only would this ensure a Conservative Republican, it would also give the voters of the states a nice little “bonus” for voting “R” instead of “D” or “L” or “Cp”, “G”, ect!

“Bullsh**. You’re so clueless about Iowa it’s not worth any more of an answer than that.”

Of course Iowa has conservatives - I was just pushing the envelope a little, relax.

Anything that blocks RINOs is good. However, Iowa is a podunk state that does not deserve the voice it gets in elections.

Exactly, we’re falling for the divide and conquer strategy of the Dims and their cohorts in the MSM. It’s all balderdash.

Or we could just become the Libertarian party, that is what you want right?

The Republican party already has a wing of the party -- it's the Republican Liberty Caucus, but they don't pretend that they define the party and they don't believe they can exclude all non-libertarians from the party.

Conservatives here seem to think they can go it alone and drive out dissenters. It isn't going to work.

Abortion, gay marriage, private school choice and that’s it.

You can add religious freedom issues, promotion the nuclear family and the issue of judges to the list.

Look at the Democrat cauci from this year.

They were all in states with a small African-American population. Wanting to look non-racist and Intimidation gave Obama a lot more votes than he would have gotten in a secret ballot.

With Iowa right next door to Illinois it also gave Obama easy access for organizing, plus you wonder now many bogus people from surrounding states were there to vote!

I am a Christian, but if one is a non-Christian and holds the same beliefs as I, then I will ally politically (while still praying for your/their soul)!

How wrong of you to presume; I merely want to eliminate RINOS (as only God can lead someone to believe a certain way, not I).

It isn't wrong of me to presume. Among the replies I received was this:

Soooo... is it possible that you hate either Christians, or Conservatives? Or both, since many are both? This is a Conservative site. Are you a real Conservative?

There are enough Christians Conservatives on this site calling non Christian Conservatives RINOs that it don't think it's a mistake at all to presume someone using the word desires to make the Republican Party the Christian Conservative Party.

If you disagree with that, great. I'd love to work together with Christians, Conservatives, Republicans, Libertarians, etc to defeat the economic and social ugliness that is the leftist philosophy.

But lately I get the feeling that Christians Conservatives just won't tolerate anyone in the party except Christian Conservatives.

If you disagree, then shout a little louder, because it's going to be hard for you to drown out all the other voices.

well how do you promote the nuclear family?

By passing legislation encouraging marriage and discouraging out-of-wedlock births and/or divorce?

ok but how?
The one thing that could possibly work is a national ad campaign. We had “Just say no” to drugs. We can also have ads that discourage abortion and out of wedlock relationships.

I don’t know your personal experiences in life, however I do know that Christ did not advocate hatred toward anyone! Sure He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and knows all right and wrong (so he doesn’t tolerate evil), but he didn’t “hate” anyone, and neither are his followers to (as fallable as WE are). However they don’t represent true Christianity if they are hateful toward you!!

Anyway, I welcome your help in defeating insane political philosophy otherwise known as socialist-liberal-Marxist-progressive.

BTW even though I am a Christian I’d rather categorize myself politically as a Constitutionalist-Libertarian-(possibly old school Reagan Conservative)?

National primary day. Letting the same five states pick the nominee every time is for the birds.

We could end welfare payments to women having children out-of-wedlock. That would discourage women from having women out-of-wedlock.

We could eliminate no-fault divorce.

We could pass laws like the one that recently passed in Arkansas that mandated only married couples be able to adopt or participate in foster care.
