The one thing (of many) that sticks in my craw was how did Oswald get off three shots in the alloted time - at a moving target - with THAT rifle. The Carcano, as I recall, was notorious for jamming/not locking.

Why would Oswald put his faith in the Carcano, when he was trained on the infinitely better M-1 Garand? Even FBI agents could not make that shot on the first try with the Carcano! And they were much better shots than Oswald.

Mannlicher-Carcanos are very capable and smooth military rifles. The notion that they weren't comes from Oliver Stone's movie JFK and several conspiracist books.

Because Oswald was a no account loser who couldn't afford an M-1 which probably sold for $200 or more back then, but he could afford $15 for a mail order war surplus Italian Carcano. The Italian government dumped thousands of them on the market in the late 50s, hence they were not expensive.

The bolt-action Carcano was not as sturdy or durable as the semi-automatic M1, but it was every bit as accurate --- and just as deadly. Yes, it was inexpensive, but it was not junk.

JFK’s assassination was a defining moment in my childhood and I have been hopeful ever since that the truth would eventually filter out. Although I think Oswald was involved, I no longer think he was alone. The other day I heard for the first time a recording purporting to be the gunshots which I believe was captured by a motorcycle cop’s open microphone. Hearing that was a sudden revelation to me. Three evenly timed shots rang out within about 2 seconds, allegedly from an Italian Carcano bolt-action rifle. That seems highly implausible to me — I own a Carcano and have shot a variety of bolt-action rifles for 35 years. It takes precious time to move your hand from the trigger to the bolt handle, cycle the bolt up, back, forward, and down again, reposition your finger on the trigger, realign the sights after recoil, and squeeze the trigger, while tracking a moving target. Oswald barely qualified on a semi-automatic Garand M1 in the military — a bolt-action rifle is slower to shoot. I don’t know how many empty brass Carcano shells were recovered in the book repository, but any discrepancies could have been “fixed”.
