WE’RE NOT LED BY THE BEST AND THE BRIGHTEST:

US elected officials scored abysmally on a test measuring their civic knowledge, with an average grade of just 44 percent, the group that organized the exam said Thursday.

Ordinary citizens did not fare much better, scoring just 49 percent correct on the 33 exam questions compiled by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI).

“It is disturbing enough that the general public failed ISI’s civic literacy test, but when you consider the even more dismal scores of elected officials, you have to be concerned,” said Josiah Bunting, chairman of the National Civic Literacy Board at ISI.

“How can political leaders make informed decisions if they don’t understand the American experience?” he added.

Good point. Best bit:

Asked about the electoral college, 20 percent of elected officials incorrectly said it was established to “supervise the first televised presidential debates.”

Good grief.

why is this surprising? when election campaigns should be an interview process, they are all popularity contests.

This election prooves democracy is not the solution. A representative republic would be better. When you let ignorant people who get checks from the government with a progressive income tax system it is only a matter of time for total collapse.

Looks like you can take the ISI civic quiz here:

http://www.americancivicliteracy.org/resources/quiz.aspx

I missed two questions, scoring a 93.94%. My income is below 45k, and my highest level of (completed) education is a GED.

I am sure that will help mess up their demographic of people with decent scores!

with an average grade of just 44 percent

That's the average grade! I want to see it broken down into categories - Republican/Democrat or voted for McCain/voted for Obama, etc.

You can take the test and compare yourself to the "elected officials."

The test looks like it was taken from the INS citizenship exam. Only 33 questions, all multiple choice

It is broken down into Liberal, Moderate, and Conservative in the sense of political affiliation:

Liberal 51

Moderate 49

Conservative 48

At least, that is how those who took the test identified themselves, I would imagine.

Judging from the results, Joe Sixpack and Soccer Mom fared better than the officials they elected.
