Socialist heathcare the way to go in U.S. (preparing "the masses" to accept it -- MEGA B***.)

It seems many people are afraid of socialism. But following the outcome of the election, I've found many are ill-informed about what socialism is, so I'd like to clear things up and show people there is nothing to fear.

Socialism is a social organization in which the government owns and operates the means of production.

Its opposite is capitalism, where private companies and individuals control the economy.

Socialism contends that capitalist societies unjustly concentrate wealth and power within a small group; thus, socialism is an attempt to create a more equal society to live in.

That's the technical definition. For the United States it would mean the government controlling more institutions than it does now. America is one of the least socialist of the developed nations, but expanding the government's influence in society may prove helpful.

President-elect Barack Obama will not make America completely socialist, and it is important to remember the socialist institutions we already have, such as police, fire departments and public education. These are some of our most needed and treasured institutions.

The biggest socialist institution America needs is universal healthcare. We are the only industrialized nation not to guarantee healthcare to its citizens.

“Free” health care is a great concept until you actually need it and find out it doesn't deliver on it's promise.

Like meeting a beautiful woman at the bar. Until you're both behind closed doors only to discover “she's” a “he”.

This broad is a complete brainwashed socialistic idiot.

There is a "conservative" alternative to socialized health care and it must be promoted: briefly, it's tax advantaged HSAs (Health Savings Accounts) combined with high deductible (catastrophic) health insurance. In fact, it already exists in some states and millions are participating in such plans.

The problems are that medical insurance across state lines is still not allowed, so many state mandates make high deuctible policies impossible for their residents.

McCain's health care proposals were worthy of consideration, but unfortunately the MSM and Osama Obama's disingenuous attacks against them made it very difficult for the dumbed down electorate - typified by the authoress of this article - to understand what this debate in the campaign was all about.

Don’t you just yearn to have the government own everything, “take care” of you, and tell you what you are allowed to do or not? (/sarc)

Socialism is UNAMERICAN. What made America great is the free enterprise system and freedom for individuals to pursue happiness their own way, with no government interference.

Socialism is the government controlling everything, including and especially the people, it kills all incentives, and makes people PRISONERS of the government.

Just ask anyone who lived under communism.

Good post. The bottom line diffence is that liberals think people are too incapable of doing anything on their own and therefore, need government interference. When someone is successful, they either cheated or were just plain lucky - so whatever they've accomplished should be taken away and shared with others. Capitalists, however, believe people are capable of great things if the government would get out of the way.

All these Obama voters should be insulted that they are considered incapable. Instead, they relish the idea.

If government health care is so excellent, why do British and Canadian people (at least those who can afford it) fly to the United States to have surgery and cancer treatment?

And something like 70% of those in France have private health insurance - on top of the high taxes they pay for socialized medicine.

Wow! What silliness. And how sad that so many Americans won’t recognize it as such.
