I would add, "And shooting them," which this guy did. Nothing like shooting a few pirates to discourage the others.
If you make the price of piracy high enough, they will go into another line of business. But if you reward them, then piracy will increase exponentially. It will not just be limited to Somalia.
Elementary psychology 101. Elementary justice 101. Elementary civilization 101. Punish criminals and reward virtue.
Think bigger: quad .50s on each side of the ship, with night vision equipment for the gunner and the spotters. Put them under tarps - let the SOBs be surprised when the penultimate creation of JMB is uncovered and a wall of lead and steel comes in their direction.
Enough ships do that, and the few remaining pirates will be unable to hire crews. Further, the sharks and crabs need to eat, and this allows those resisting pirates to not only perform a valuable public service, but to be eco-friendly while doing so. :>)
Who needs Lloyd’s when you have reliable .50 cal insurance?
Better is shooting at them, accurately. Two purposes are thereby served: 1) Less pirates, esp. on YOUR ship; and 2) less pirates in general, as people in that business are like everyone else and would prefer to die somewhat later than their next boat ride.
Less experienced seamen might have pulled the covers over their head and prayed for divine intervention, but Bailey, then 52, instinctively grabbed the gun beside his bed and jumped into action. He didn't even bother getting dressed.
Yo, Sarah: OF COURSE he didn't bother getting dressed. What would you have had him do, say "You-hooooo, Mr. Piiiiirate...could you be a doll and do me a big favor by waiting for a minute or two until I get dressed, so that when I shoot at you the hot brass from my gun won't burn me?" GMAFB.
"When I woke up, the pirates were already trying to force their way into the captain's cabin and I came face to face with one of them, who tried to fire his Kalashnikov. Thankfully, it jammed and it gave me a few seconds to retaliate. As I fired my own gun, he tried to escape leaving behind a trail of blood.
"It was very dark, but we could see the gang's boat near to our ship. We couldn't see anyone on it, but I fired two magazines in its direction and it drifted off into the dark. It's something I'll never forget, but it didn't leave me feeling particularly traumatised."
This guy is, for those out there unfamiliar with the vanishing species, a Real Man. Glad to see that there are still a few who call (formerly) Great Britain home.
I agree. Prolly couldn’t get the safety off!
With regards to the Sirius tanker 450 NM off shore...my money is on it being an inside job.
My wife recently saw a bumper sticker:
Where am I going??
And why am I in this handbasket?
Most insurance companies won't even insure an armed merchant man these days.
Picking up 6 man Blackwater crews and dropping them after running the pirate corridor is what is needed with A-10 back up in case the pirates have crew served weapons on their bigger ships, courtesy the Somali Muslim Council ( Odinga/Obama friends) and China.
The goal you know is to establish a string of Shiite countries from Iran, surrounding Saudi. On this leg it is Iran/Yemen/Somalia/Kenya ( to come)/Sudan.
This is what this piracy is about.
Odinga/Obama failed to deliver Kenya to the new Caliphate.
.
heh. I read that as "Polly couldn't get the safety off."
Want a cracker? Arrrgghhh!
All guns jam. All guns break. It’s just a matter of when.
You own a reliable one that hasn’t jammed or broke yet.
