If you are white, you are “rich”. I learned early — I was robbed at knife-point when I was 13. I asked the boys why they were robbing me. They said, “cuz you is rich”. I asked why they thought so. They said, “cuz you is white”. I’ve been a realist about racial relations ever since.
I got this beat! While in the Marine Corps, I had a fellow Corporal, an Afican-American, who told me that I do not understand anything about “common folks problems” because I’ve always had money!
I explained that my father left my mother with four children, no car, no house and no money when I was five years old. She worked three jobs, my brother dropped out of school and took a job and we were on S&H Green Stamps and Food Stamps until I was 14! He said, “You’re lying, you know you have always had it good!”
This is the problem! The systems that are in place are based on gender, race and perceived prejudice. If welfare was changed to be actually based on NEED, I wouldn’t be AS opposed to it as I am!
