You mistake Zulu for savages. They had a hard-disciplined, dedicated army in the 19th century and would have kept junk tribes out of SA and come to accomodation with the Europeans.

I happen to be reading “Washing of the Spears” right now, an exhaustive account of the Zulu nation in the 19th century. Indiscriminate, random, widescale killing and executions of men, women and children were commonplace, particular under the revered, but psychotic leader Shaka, under whom the Zulus rose to their zenith.
Yes, compared to some of the more primitive tribes, the Hottentots and the nomadic Bushmen, for example, the Zulu were a more organized and formidable military force. However, compared to even rudimentary standards of Western civilization they were indeed savages.
