Only TWO ways to effectivelyu deal with these people.

1) Set up international Admiralty courts with authority to try piracy and hang them when you get them

2) Require merchant shipping in pirate areas to be armed and have crewmen willing and able to use arms.

ONCE AGAIN ISLAM has struck out against civilization as it has so often in the past by this practice. After all, Mohammad himself was a lnad pirate.

Indian navy has robust response for Somali-based pirates
Jonathan Manthorpe, Vancouver Sun
Published: Thursday, November 20, 2008
For the second time in a week, an Indian navy frigate assigned to protect shipping in the Gulf of Aden has clashed with pirates operating out of Somalia.

Reports from New Delhi say the frigate Tabar — a modern semi-stealth warship — which is serving with a nine-country international naval task force, destroyed a heavily armed pirate mothership with its machineguns after coming under fire from it on Tuesday evening. It is believed the pirate crew escaped in two speedboats.

On Nov. 11, commandos aboard a helicopter dispatched from the Tabar foiled an attack on a Saudi Arabian chemical and oil carrier by firing machineguns at three pirate speedboats approaching the vessel.

Twenty minutes later commandos from the Tabar drove off another band of pirates as they prepared to attack an Indian merchant ship.

India’s naval action against the pirates is being celebrated at home as a demonstration of the country’s capacity to project power at sea and is being portrayed as a small victory in its naval rivalry with China.

India’s robust response to attempted pirate attacks in the world’s most dangerous waters off the Horn of Africa and the approaches to the Suez Canal comes as the owners of a Saudi Arabian supertanker with a cargo of $100,000 million in oil start to negotiate with pirates who captured the ship on Sunday.

The MV Sirius Star, three times the size of an aircraft carrier, is the largest ship ever captured by pirates and is now being held for ransom along with its crew of 25 off the coast of Somalia.

Piracy by bands based in Somalia, which has had no effective government for 17 years, has become epidemic in recent years. The International Maritime Bureau, which gathers information and advises ship owners on how to address crime at sea, says there have been at least 80 attempted pirate attacks on shipping in the Gulf of Aden region this year.

The Gulf is one of the world’s busiest shipping routes, linking Europe with Asia, and about 40 ships have been captured by the pirates who are currently holding about 20 ships and more than 250 crew members.

Usually the owners have paid ransoms, sometimes $1 million or more, for the release of their ships and crews, making the business of piracy highly profitable.

The Muslim savage criminals that do this board the ships with grappling hooks. 2 men with shotguns and fire axes can keep them from doing this.
The Navys of the world except for India are cowards.

Well India is gonna have to do the heavy lifting since the world doesn’t want the lone Superpower around anymore. Now our new president can gleefully disband our military for “change” !

They are too slow for this kind of work. A small, fast, weapon laden vessel would be ideal........

All the old “four stackers” were used up by the Brits long ago or have become manhole covers by now.

Good for India. This is happening in their backyard and I am happy to see them stepping to the plate to handle it. Maybe some of our allies will get a clue and begin to shoulder more of their own military needs.

The Tabar was a popular weapon among Indian warriors. A tabar is a Axe, some types even have picks on the end; while others will have a dagger conceiled in the handle.

Frigates can manage 30+ knots. Why would you need much more speed? Cant imagine a pirate junkpile keeping that up for too long. Plus, the range of these warships + choppers, etc is enough to KO anything any pirate has to offer.
