Even as the world's largest supertanker the Sirius Star continues to be in the grip of Pirates of the coast of Somalia. The Indian Navy appears to have taken the lead in the fight aagainst pirates, shortly after a successful operation against Pirates last week -- the Indian Navy warship INS Tabar sank a Somalian Pirate ship of the Gulf of Aden. At about 10 PM last night the Indian Navy spotted a pirate ship, The Navy challenged the pirate ship which had several speed boats accompanying it.
The Pirate ship tried to ram the Tabar at which point the Tabar opened fire. No casualties have been reported on the Indian side.
Meanwhile the Sirius Star has anchored off the coast of Somalia in Eyl..even as Pirates took over another Iranian Cargo Vessel. U.S. Navy Commander Jane Campbell of the Bahrain-based 5th Fleet said the status of the crew and cargo was not known.
In the first-ever action after being deployed in the Gulf of Aden, Indian Navy on Tuesday (November 11) thwarted an attempt by pirates to capture an Indian merchant vessel in the region. The ship, M V Jag Arnav, has recently crossed the Suez Canal and was eastward bound when it was surrounded by pirates, who tried to board and hijack the ship, Navy sources in New Delhi said.
When the 38,265-tonne bulk carrier, owned by Mumbai-based Great Eastern Shipping Company, raised an alarm, it caught the attention of the Indian Naval warship, INS Tabar, which was patrolling in the Gulf of Aden waters.
score one for the good guys
It is pretty sad when the Indians have to do the necessary while our handringers argue about rules of engagement and habeas corpus. Any child who watches morning cartoons knows how to deal with pirates. You have to graduate from an Ivy League university to turn it into an intellectually challenging “question.”
Way to go India!
Well, lots of their tonnage passes through that area, and they recently had an Indian merchant ship and crew kidnapped, so theyve got a lot of pressure on their backs to do something.
The French have deployed out there too. Im in the merchant marine industry, so I get regular updates on their convoy “slots” where they send out general info on “We are protecting vessels traveling this route from z to y times, join the convoy if you want”.
The pirate menace has become real. And very deadly, in this arena.
Go Indian Navy!
Now the US Navy needs to get involved!
Tamp this menace down NOW before this becomes a full scaled menace
Is it our responsibility to protect Indian merchantmen? Are the pirates taking American ships?
Quite right. Though it must be said, that theyre disrupting an important oil and cargo transit route, which in the end, certainly does affect US interests. Besides the undesirability of the spread of lawlessness in an already terrorism vulnerable area.
Nice ship.
On 17 November 1997, Russia and India signed a USD $1 billion contract, for three Krivak III Class multi-purpose frigates. The Indian Navy wanted to fill the gap created by the decommissioning of the Leander Class frigates and until the Project 17 Class frigates enter service. After the signing of the contract, Severnoye Design Bureau began a detail design layout and the shipbuilder, Baltisky Zavod of St. Petersburg began preparations for their construction. The project involved around 130 suppliers from Russia, India, Britain, Germany, Denmark, Belarus, Ukraine and other countries including over 30 St. Petersburg-based naval design organizations and institutes. VT Halmatic of the UK has supplied a pair of Pacific 22 Mk.I rigid inflatable boats (RIBs), for use as general ship boats. These RIBs are designed primarily for ASW warfare and for the air defence of naval task forces. There are also a considerable number of Indian component suppliers. According to the original contract schedule, the Talwar was intended for handover in May 2002, with the Trishul to follow in November that year and the Tabar being accepted in May 2003.
Yes, she is a nice ship.
I would bet when the word gets around there won’t be any more pirates try to ram her. From the looks of the Tabar she can take on and sink anything those pirates have.
Yup.
A preliminary search revealed that the vessel carries several supersonic Anti-Ship Cruise Missiles of the Klub series. She didnt even use her main gun to deal with the pirate vessels. Knocked em out with a burst from the CIWS gatling cannon.
I did wonder... youve got to be quite a crazy pirate to try and ram this thing. Maybe he thought he was Luke Vs. the Deathstar.
LOL! You’re right, they must have had a death wish.
When I read your article and got to the point of the attempted ram I thought the Tabar must have been a tub but reading further and then seeing the pic you posted she’s far from a tub and I had to see more of her.
It’d be nice to get about ten ships similar to her from various countries and do a number on the pirates, quickly.
Post an embargo on these places. Any boat leaving to be boarded. If weapons are found on board the boat sunk and people on board returned to a country with passage back on first offense. On the second they can try to save their boat.
How do the pirates climb up the “walls” of the ships? It’s my understanding that the pirates have small little boats. The cargo ships are GIGANTIC!!
Nice summary. Sad, but true.
Ping
Rope ladders, grappling hooks, and guts.
