My plan, in a nutshell:

1. Stock up on food supplies, at least six months worth.
2. Stock up on water. We live in a desert, and a water shortage isn’t outside the realm of possibility.
3. Save up several thousands in cash to keep on hand at home.
4. Pay off debt as quickly as possible.
5. Assess our guns/ammo situation. We need a good hunting rifle and a smaller handgun in addition to our Desert Eagle and a revolver.

This doesn’t allow for any and every disaster scenario under the sun, but in our city (Phoenix) getting out of town in a disaster would be nearly impossible. With food, water, protection, and cash, I think we could manage on our own for quite a few weeks.

4. Pay off debt as quickly as possible.

Or, take on as much debt as possible, if you perceive the breakdown as imminent and irreversible.
