THE cutbacks at Time Inc. are starting to claim more senior people on the business side at the same time that the editorial cuts accelerate.
And in a move likely to surprise no one, Time Inc. CEO Ann Moore has decided not to have a Christmas party this year.
Last year, during the one December of the past four when there were no layoffs, Moore held an in-house party that featured the Time Inc. Glee Club, a buffet and beverages.
This year, she decided to fire up to 600 people - and skip the party altogether.
Meanwhile, at least 20 editorial people were axed yesterday by Rick Tetzeli, the managing editor of Entertainment Weekly. Elsewhere, the company said it was axing 92 people from the circulation and consumer-marketing departments.
Some publications are looking for volunteers to leave.
Sports Illustrated Group at first looked like it would be the hardest-hit by the job cuts, but Editor Terry McDonell is actually looking for 40 people to step up across his entire group, which includes the sports weekly and related Web sites, Golf Magazine, SI for Kids and Sports Illustrated Latino. Staffers have until Nov. 24 to decide.
People also is looking for 18 volunteers, and Rick Stengel, the top editor at Time, is seeking 20 employees to step forward.
The editorial employees on People, Time and Sports Illustrated are covered by a union contract with the Newspaper Guild. Entertainment Weekly staffers are not covered, and thus were being cut outright yesterday.
No numbers have been divulged yet for Fortune and Money.
Time Inc. Editor-in-Chief John Huey already bounced Money's top editor, Eric Schurenberg, on Nov. 6, and replaced him with Fortune Executive Editor Craig Matters.

Your suggestions to save the magazine are both simple and logical and will therefor never see the light of day. I’m afraid committed Leftists will ride this puppy into the ground.
I believe that time lag, as much as bias, is the death knell of the weekly. Used to be, when something hit the headlines, you could expect to get a fuller more complete analysis of the issue in a few days when your Time or Newsweek came in the mail. Now, you can get that same (and better) level of analysis online right now and for free at a multitude of sites, and even on cable if you choose wisely.
With the vaunted "24 hour news cycle" there is no market for week old news. Life has passed these relics by. Too bad, so sad.
They should try at SKI magazine and National Geographics. I just renewed both subscriptions Friday.
I’m sure it won’t matter as they already had their Obama party already.
Maybe it’s just a new policy of having only one ‘messiah’ party a year.
You know, the whole thing about stepping up to be fired got me thinking.
When the libs are put on the line to either keep their job or be let go for the rest of the group, if they are such selfless, altruistic people, why don’t they have droves and droves of people asking to be let go? Why aren’t they all throwing themselves on the unemployment grenade?
Because when their ass is on the line, we find out what kind of people they are. They aren’t superhuman, superior-moraled people as they have made you believe. They are just plain, normal people with a strong (and I would say massive) self-interest streak.
Shake out all the Slimes and Newsweak subscription litter cards and drop in the mail for proce$$ing. Send a message and clean up the planet.
However, Time is run by uber-leftists who will reform NOTHING, util the day they shut down.
You said basically what I was going to say....
FWIW- I've not opened a TIME Mag since the late 80's.....
I used to love that mag & subscribed....but they too are left bent...and it showed too often for my tastes...
I quit them over 18 yrs ago....
fwiw-
MOLON LABE
And was about as accurate as Time.
Time Magazine is owned by Time Warner, not NYT Inc. The Washington Post owns Newsweek.
