... but didn't you have to be a property owner at that time to vote?

I know that this was true in Maryland in the past. It was probably the case in other states too.

My only problem with restricting suffrage to property owners is that there are plenty of high income people who pay a lot of taxes who do not own property.

Agreed. Voting should be limited to people who actually pay income taxes, but we all know that would never fly

My two criteria for voting or holding public office: you must a.) have served in the military (no non-vets or currently serving troops) and b.) be a net tax-PAYER (no government employees or welfare/bailout recipients... net tax EATERS).
