Both the Democratic and Republican National Committees are likely to have new leadership next year.
Former Democratic Governor Howard Dean of Vermont is stepping down, having completely recovered from his unfortunate reputation as an erratic and wildly liberal 2004 presidential contender. As chairman of the DNC, he adopted a controversial "50-state strategy" that had the party pouring resources into states it normally didn't contest. His strategy paid off this year as Barack Obama won such states as Indiana and Virginia that had not voted Democratic at the presidential level since Barry Goldwater's landslide loss in 1964. Unknown yet is whom Mr. Dean's replacement will be, but it's certainly going to be someone President-elect Obama will have confidence in -- campaign manager David Plouffe comes to mind. On the Republican side, the jockeying to replace current GOP Chairman Mike Duncan has begun. Mr. Duncan has been a competent administrator and fundraiser but the widely perceived need for new blood in the wake of the party's second consecutive drubbing at the polls makes him unlikely to be re-elected. Several candidates are lining up to replace him. Michigan GOP State Chairman Saul Anuzis is actively campaigning on a platform of reinvigorating the party's grass roots and returning to basic conservative principles. South Carolina Party Chairman Kalton Dawson is touting his fundraising abilities as he rounds up votes among fellow RNC members.

Newt would have made a good candidate last time and is certainly needed to set a conservative agenda this time.

We saw this movie. It started out with some great action scenes, but by the end, it was all whining and idiotic sex scandals. Can’t the RNC come up with any new plots?
My problem with him is one of character. There's something not quite right there, IMHO.
In a word: “No.”
Newt has already said that he’s not interested.
Forget about Newt. We need new blood. We need to look into the future not he past.
He was in a position a long time ago to prevent the GOP’s socialist slide.
Maybe Newt, Nancy and Hillary can get together with Algore and be kinder gentler compassionate anti conservatives.
I had big problems with the character of king David, but God didn't, I will defer judgement to Him on that matter.
Democrats however, have no problem using whomever that advances their agenda, that is why they have become so good at it. We on the other hand kill our own for the slightest slip, except of course the toe-tapper, who refused to resign. Wonder why there was no outcry about him, unless of course we offer deference to Homosexuals.
Yes we do. All the old players are “members of the club” now, and don’t reckon themselves accountable to the people who supported them anymore. It seems to be a pattern with so-called “conservatives” these days though. Look at how many times we’ve allowed ourselves to be fooled, because we need a leader so badly. Ah-nold, Newt, McCain, even President Bush... When ours attain power, they seem to go into compromise mode, when the left attains power, they take off the “centrist” mask and show their true ugly socialist faces. Maddening.
A cupie doll could have run the DNC in 2008 and been just as successful.
The Republican Party was leaderless, without message, and they nominated the biggest wimp-ass candidate (sorry McCain, I salute your integrity and service heroism in Vietnam, but in politics you stink .....) in history.
Even Bob Dole had more spunk and substance than McCain, and at least Dole didn't insult church-goers and conservatives every week like McCain.
Seriously, I am still convinced Romney was the GOP's best chance. Romney, despite whatever miscues he might have made in Mass 15 years ago, has the most going for him in 2008 .... looks, articulation, he LOOKED presidential ... as evidenced by the endorsements and support he got from Limbaugh, Hannity, Weyrich, Rick Santorum, Tancredo, Bob Jones III, Glenn Beck, Hugh Hewitt, Ann Coulter....
... and thousands of other very smart conservatives who wisely looked beyond the hateful anti-Romney invective which was spewed on FR and in southern evangelicle circles.
The GOP will never become a powerful leading party if it continues to reject decent Republicans like Mitt Romney simply because he is Mormon, or because he made a statement about gay rights 20 years ago, or whatever.
I'm still ticked, because what we ended up with is a decimated conservative Party headed up by the most anti-American President we've ever seen....
WHAT THE FREAK were conservative voters thinking in Fla, California, Iowa, and elsewhere when they picked McCain???

To top it off, Global Warming is a good mask for those who secretly want big government. It's an easy thing to hide behind so far, but sooner or later one realizes that push to deal with GW requires a huge expansion of government and especially government power.
Newt may be good on political theory and strategy but when it came down to the arena Bill Clinton played him like a cheap fiddle. Let him write books and stay on tv where he belongs.
We need someone from OUTSIDE Washington,DC ....
If only for perception’s sake....
People just don’t want a leader who has been involved in getting us into the economic, energy mess we currently have.
Newt is certainly smart, but should take a behind the scenes roll.... which is where he would probably be more effective anyway.
