Why is Buluth, the Iron Range and the arrowhead region so incredibly Dem? Unions? I live next door to MN, and have been over in those areas a lot for work, and the people seem pretty conservative in general life.

It's Iron Range. Their collars are as blue as they come. Lots of Eastern European immigrants, second-generations, and New Dealers. You could get lynched up there mentioning that you're a Republican. (Although why anyone would want to is beyond me.)

My wife's family is from there -- Two Harbors to be precise -- and although extremely cordial and well-read people, they are Yellow Dog Democrats to the bone. It's a sad waste of potential.

Northern Minnesota had the highest concentration of Communists during the 1930's when my parents lived there.

There was a dairy farmer near my Dad's place that had a huge sign painted on his barn: "Wipe God from Heaven and Capitalism from the Earth!"
