Army promotes first woman to four star rank
AFP, Yahoo! ^

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The female descendant of a long line of US military officers was promoted to four star general Thursday, the first woman ever to reach the top rung of the US military.

Ann Dunwoody accepted the promotion and command of the army's materiel command with humor and humility at a Pentagon ceremony so packed with well wishers that three star generals were standing in the aisles.

"When people ask me, Ann, did you ever think you were going to be a general officer, say nothing about a four-star, I say not in my wildest dreams," she said.

"There is no one more surprised than I, except, of course, my husband.

And you know what they say, behind every successful woman there's an astonished man."

From what I've heard, she is one spitfire who could hold her own with the best field soldier.

Is this Bush’s fault? Should the press be “blaming” this on Bush? Or will he get credit for promoting women?

Let’s see.. how can we blame President Bush.. how about.. Because of President Bush’s empire building and horrible economy, this poor woman can’t retire in peace, instead, they promote her to keep her working..

I was going to post this list of quotes:

"I am very honored but also very humbled today with this announcement, I grew up in a family that didn't know what glass ceilings were. This nomination only reaffirms what I have known to be true about the military throughout my career that the doors continue to open for men and women in uniform." Lieutenant General Ann Dunwoody

"I have never considered myself anything but a Soldier. I recognize that with this selection, some will view me as a trailblazer, but it's important that we remember the generations of women, whose dedication, commitment and quality of service helped open the doors of opportunity for us today." Lieutenant General Ann Dunwoody

"There is no one more surprised than I — except, of course, my husband. You know what they say, 'Behind every successful woman there is an astonished man.' " Lieutenant General Ann Dunwoody

“I have followed her career for 33 years. Every assignment she has ever had, she’s done in an outstanding manner. So it really doesn’t surprise me she was the first woman selected for four stars.” Dunwoody's Father, retired Brigadier General Harold H. Dunwoody

"Lieutenant General Dunwoody's nomination not only underscores her significant contributions and success throughout 33 years of service, but also shows the level of possible opportunity in our Army's diverse, quality, all-volunteer force. Our nation will continue to benefit from Lieutenant General Dunwoody's leadership as the Army continues to build strength from our diversity." General George W. Casey, Chief of Staff of the Army

"Her 33 years of service, highlighted by extraordinary leadership and devotion to duty, make her exceptionally qualified for this senior position," Robert Gates, Secretary of Defense

Oh Yes, they will say her only alternative was to join the army. It’s Bush’s fault she joined and stayed in for a career....

I’m chatting with a friend on e-mail now who served with her. He said she was no paperwork jockey, she was a real, boots in the mud soldier. She would be on base earlier than anyone was up, running with new recruits and was always standing up for NOCs.

She could only get the promotion because Obama’s president-elect.

(I don’t believe this, I’m just saying that’s the spin that will be out there.)

You're pretty lucky to have a bit of the inside scoop! I'd love to know more about her, I hope a bio if forthcoming!

From the headline, I thought it the article was about Eve. I guess that thing with the apple was not a career-buster.
