Firefighters and a squadron of aircraft launched a desperate daylight attack Friday to push back a wind-whipped wildfire that destroyed at least 100 homes and forced thousands to evacuate their homes in the longtime celebrity hideaway of Montecito.

Officials had no projection on the containment of the fast-moving brush fire that started Thursday evening in the foothills of Montecito, just south of Santa Barbara. Fanned by winds between 50 and 70 mph, the fire broke out in the Cold Springs area at about 6 p.m.
Fire officials began an aggressive attack from the air at daybreak with the help of nine water-dropping helicopters and 10 air tankers, said Terri Nisich, a spokeswoman with the Santa Barbara County Executive Office. A high wind warning was in effect in Los Angeles and Ventura counties through Saturday, with possible gusts of up to 70 mph in some passes and canyons.
The blaze, dubbed the Tea Fire, had burned up to 2,500 acres -- about 4 square miles -- and had destroyed at least 100 homes by 6 am Friday. Around 5,400 residents had been evacuated.

It's kind of like that joke about why don't they make the whole airplane out of the stuff they make the black box from.
It’s not nice to fool with Mother Nature: just like Malibu, you build multi-million dollar Marilyn Mansions in those hills then it’s on you.
The same could be said of nearly many other modern human triumphs of engineering.
Its not nice to fool with Mother Nature, people were never meant to travel 60 miles per hour. If you go that fast and a wheel comes off your car, then it's on you. ...or flying or boating or take your pick.
I congratulate these people for having the means and the determination to acquire these beautiful homes of luxury and I mourn their losses. No one deserves something like this.
Montecito is east of Santa Barbara, not south. South of Santa Barbara is the ocean, but one can trust an NBC 'reporter' to be too lazy to look at a map.
The hills there are on a natural cycle of grow/wither/burn; some plants even have a waxy coating on their seeds so germination doesn’t take place until there’s a burn.
So ... every so often you get a major fire; sooner if some human cause sparks it. 1977 (Sycamore Canyon), 1990 (Painted Cave), 2008 (Tea).
I would not be surprised to see the blaze renamed the "Gay Fire."
'Why doesn't 'SuperGlue' stick to the INSIDE of the tube? What do people in China call THEIR good tableware?
Ditto that.
“I would not be surprised to see the blaze renamed the “Gay Fire.”
Care to explain this statement??
I think Ms. Oprah has a house there.
Forest fires, earthquakes, mudslides...etc..
Geez...it’s like the Old Testament out in California.
Sure. Given all the hatred being spewed by those opposed to Prop 8 in CA, it would not surprise me in the least if this fire was not somehow purposely set as an act of revenge.
You, sir or madam, are a bit of an idiot. California is a huge state and you just choose one news story to describe it. Do a little more reading (more than just the headlines). There’s a great big world out there and you are missing it.
A mind is a terrible thing to waste.
I have visited CA many times and thoroughly enjoy it. I am also aware of viciousness being caused by those that opposed Prop 8 that is going on in many places in America. I am also aware of a liberal movement to overthrow American values at whatever means they can.
I stand by my statement.
You are among the last people I desire approval from.
Whatever...........
Old saying: “If they don’t know, you can’t tell them.”
But you are going to try, in a rather crude way, aren't you?
I have a relative who lives in this area. They cannot clear the underbrush ( thank you EPA )so it accumulates and becomes a tinderbox over a number of years.
So deliberately setting a fire to burn down the homes of those who most likely agree with their agenda (the Hollywood crowd) accomplish this? Sure you weren't just trying to be cute?
This is our second huge fire here this year. The air is filled with smoke and ash (again!) and, if the sundowners come back in force again tonight, there's a chance the fire might come down into the city proper. We're also running short of water, so we're being advised to skip showers, not water our yards or wash our cars, conserve in every way possible. So if I appear even less likely to suffer fools gladly than I would normally, it's just because I am. This is quite serious to those of us in the potential path of this hell, and your witless comment, lame in the best of times, is right now ignorant and annoying.
I said it would not surprise me, and I stand by that. I did not say that I wished that was the case. I recall several cases of arson over the recent past that have devastated homes and forest land. One of the most recent was a huge fire in CA set by a Native American trying to get work for his fire fighting buddies.

I never said my hearts and prayers do not go out to the victims. They do.

I find the destruction of American values ignorant and annoying too.
