Sen. John Cornyn of Texas is poised to become the next chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, after Sen. Norm Coleman of Minnesota dropped his leadership bid. The post is influential because the chairmen recruits candidates and raises money for them. But Coleman remains locked in a tight race to hold his seat, separated from Democrat Al Franken by 206 votes out of nearly 3 million cast, with a recount expected to begin next week. Cornyn won re-election handily Nov. 4. Coleman called Cornyn on Thursday to drop out and support his rival. Coleman has backed off his bid in order to give his undivided attention to the recount efforts, according to his spokesman, Leroy Coleman. But going forward, he is going to put his full support behind Senator Cornyn for NRSC chairman.
Cornyn said he would work to help both Coleman and Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, who faces a runoff against Democrat Jim Martin. I sincerely appreciate his support, Cornyn said of Coleman. He has been a tireless advocate for his constituents in Minnesota and I will continue to do whatever I can to help ensure his return to the Senate next year. The resolution leaves Republican leadership races apparently uncontested for conference elections Nov. 18.
Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Minority Whip Jon Kyl of Arizona and Conference Chairman Lamar Alexander of Tennessee will all keep their posts. John Ensign of Nevada, the current NRSC chairman, is running for head of the Policy Committee, which Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas is vacating as she considers whether to campaign for governor. John Thune of North Dakota seeks the GOP conferences vice chairmanship, which Cornyn now holds.
TAB
God Bless Texas
John Thune is the SOUTH Dakota senator.
Senator Ensign did a HORRIBLE job in that post, I certainly wish Senator Cornyn better luck.
Maybe Senator Cornyn can see to it that all the people who run against Republicans in 2010 are as broke and pitiful as Rick Noriega was.
Ping...
Maybe some headway into sanity now.
AMEN!
Whats in the water in the blue states? Welfare states.. Voting for the sorry likes of kerry; kennedy, franken, frank, murtha, ried, pus-hole et al is a revolting concept to almost all Texans!
Goodnight!
I hope he does a better job than his predecessors. Liddy Dole was awful in 2006. She didn’t send money to Montana and we barely lost that seat. That and the virginia seat which we would not have lost even with the Macaca incident if we had had some compotent leadership.
That set off a series of events that made Mac our nominee this year instead of conservative favorite George Allen, and we all know how that turned out.
Repeat after me... NO MORE MODERATES... NO MORE MODERATES... NO MORE MODERATES...
I nominate Lamar Alexander for finding jobs for Bush’s long time friends of the family. I mean the ones in public office. Put them all in jobs away from politics. I think Lamar should lead by example and be the first to go. He can take his side kick Corker da Porker with him.
Sen. Cornyn was also John McLame’s nemesis when it came to the immigration task force.
Give ‘em hell, John!

Cornyn is so low key that it is remarkable that he has ever been elected to anything. She seems lacking in energy.
Poor Liddy, I don’t think she likes that nickname either. She began to believe her own press releases. I surely hated to see her go down because that was the Helms seat, and Democrats and liberals cheered mercilessly.
Did Murtha beat Russell in his race? I haven’t heard.
Lol. Senator Cornyn is a "he" and he's actually quite popular here in Texas. I've certainly voted for him in each of his two elections. He's no RINO.
Oh sorry, I realize now that your “she” was just a typo. My apologies!
Can Cornyn recruit good candidates?
Can he raise gobs of cash on par or outpacing the DSCC & DNC?
